raisethewage

July 25th, 9am
AFSCME Hall at 688 Charnelton Street

One in four Oregon workers earns less than $12 an hour, and an Oregon worker earning minimum wage takes home just $19,240 a year - not nearly enough to afford the basics like rent and food. Oregon families can't wait any longer. Our lawmakers failed to take action this session on raising the minimum wage, despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of Oregonians are working full time but still struggling to make ends meet. It's time to take the conversation to the streets. We need to send a strong message: It's time to raise the wage to lift up half a million Oregonians and their families, and create an economy that works for all of us.

Supporters across the state will be heading into their communities to talk with their neighbors about why raising the minimum wage is important for hardworking Oregonians and their families. We'll also be asking folks to pledge their support for raising the minimum wage.

camp

Water Wonders Exploration Camp
Summer 2015

Goal: Promote environmental literacy in economically challenged communities by providing a field-trip based camp free of charge to youth ages 10-12 years of age.

By the end of the camp, participants will have a broad understanding of what defines a healthy watershed and how human use & dependence influence water quality in the watershed. Hydrologic concepts will be taught using storytelling, games and activities, and nature journaling. We anticipate that students walk away from this experience knowing how their decisions affect clean water resources and that they are inspired to be good land use stewards.

kamish

Nagasaki Kamishibai

July 31st, 6-9pm
CALC at 458 Blair Boulevard

As part of the Last Friday Art Walk, CALC and WAND will be presenting a Kamishibai video honoring the Nagasaki atomic bomb victims.

Kamishibai, literally "paper drama", is a form of storytelling that originated in Japanese Buddhist temples in the 12th century where monks used picture scrolls to convey stories to a largely unschooled audience.

This kamishibai was created by students of Sakurababa Junior High School in Nagasaki after hearing Mr. Katsuji Yoshida speak of his atomic bomb experience.

Students developed the script and artwork for this picture-card version of his story for their school cultural festival. It was completed in 2007 and is now a video feature in the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.

Movie and Discussion:
Who Bombed Judi Bari?

August 5th, 7 pm
601 W. 13th Ave.
Free

Judi Bari was the victim of a car bomb assassination attempt on May 24, 1990 in California. The bombing nearly killed Judi and injured her passenger, Darryl Cherney, as they were setting out on a promotional tour for "Redwood Summer" to gain support for direct action protests in defense of the ancient redwoods. In the wake of the bombing, the FBI and Oakland Police ignored mountains of evidence, failed to conduct a legitimate investigation and tried to blame the victims.

Sponsored by the Lane branch of the Industrial Workers of the World. More info: [email protected].

marcy

Marcy Westerling
Living Legacy Memorial Celebration

August 23rd, 3pm
1st Unitarian Church
1011 SW 12th Ave in Portland, Oregon

Marcy Westerling was a powerful force: a visionary organizer, movement leader, cancer warrior, friend, partner, mentor and an inspiration to many. From the living rooms of small town Oregon to the halls of the medical industrial complex, Marcy organized for her communities and was a true freedom fighter in every sense of the word. The world is a more just and beautiful place because of Marcy.

Marcy was many things to many people - a friend, a mentor, an inspiration, daughter, sister, aunt, partner and wife - but to all of us, she was an organizer. She was always listening, thinking, feeling, writing, and plotting or scheming, as she would say, to bring people together to make their lives and our world better. She continues to challenge us to use our personal and collective power to counter the wrongs in our lives and push with courage and determination towards justice for ourselves, our communities, and our world.

On August 23rd we will be remembering and celebrating the many ways that Marcy lit up our world and our lives and brought us together. We will be grieving together and we will be honoring the legacy that Marcy has left us, and continues to challenge us to advance. Hosted by the Rural Organizing Project, and lovingly planned by her family, friends, and colleagues, we will be following Marcy's direction to grieve our loss and celebrate her life with sorrow and love. All are welcome.

Please RSVP here and make sure to note if you will be joining us for the ceremony from 3:00 - 4:30 pm and/or the community meal and dance party 4:30-7:30, and the ages of your children if they will be attending.

If you have not already submitted a tribute with your own reflections on the way Marcy touched your life, please consider doing so. These testimonies will be compiled and shared at the Marcy Westerling Living Legacy Memorial Celebration and beyond. Please send us your stories, however simple or elaborate, about how Marcy has made a difference in your life and your organizing. No contribution is too small or big. Email [email protected] to share your tribute to Marcy Westerling.

We also invite everyone to honor Marcy Westerling and contribute today to sustaining her legacy through the Marcy Westerling Legacy Fund.
