GrapeVine Sessions
In July, two sessions were held reaching 26 women.  They were:
  • Portage County - September Kozicki
  • Sauk County - Lori Rudolph

Thank you ladies, for educating individuals in your communities!

If you presented in August, please be sure to send in your paperwork so participants receive their follow-up survey and that the session information is available for future newsletters.

Participant Comments

Stacy Schmitt, one of our Faith Community Nurses shared this email with me.

Hello Nora,

I just wanted to pass along a great story I had from a participant in my "Heart Health" talk.

I saw this lady last week and she came up to me and said "I have to thank you so much for your talk, it saved my life"  She had experienced a heart attack and since she took the class, understood the warning signs and got help quickly.  She said to keep up the great work and keep offering the classes!

We will be following up with this participant to interview her and get a full story which we will share with you at a later date.  I guess you never know how your presentation may impact someone.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Action Plan - A new action released by the FDA will increase the participation of women, minorities, and the elderly in research trials. Read the press release.

November Observances

  • American Diabetes Month - Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. If it's not controlled, diabetes can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease, and other health problems. Almost 28% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed. The US Department of Health and Human Services has a toolkit for the month.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Month - COPD is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory (non-reversible) asthma, and some forms of bronchiectasis. This disease is characterized by increasing breathlessness, often mistaken for as a normal part of aging.
  • Lung Cancer Awareness Month - Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both lungs. As these cells grow, they can form tumors and interfere with the functioning of the lung, which provides oxygen to the body via the blood.
  • National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month - Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia among older people. It is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually even the ability to carry out the simplest tasks.  Great month to do a "Healthy Aging Brain" session.
  • National Family Caregivers Month - More than than 65 million Americans care for loved ones with chronic conditions, disabilities, disease, or the frailties of old age. Caregiver Action Network is a non-profit organization that provides education, support and resources to caregivers.
  • National Healthy Skin Month - Currently one in five individuals will develop skin cancer. Learn how to prevent and detect skin cancer.
  • National Hospice and Palliative Care Month - Helps to raise awareness of the resources available for individuals with a life-limiting illness. Resources can help patients communicate with doctors and hospitals, navigate the maze of care needs, figure out insurance coverage, and help loved ones face the challenges of care giving.
  • National Stomach Cancer Awareness Month - Raises awareness and provides information about stomach cancer which is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Of the almost one million people diagnosed each year, approximately 700,000 will lose their lives.
Thank you for all you do for the GrapeVine Project.

Sincerely,
