Two useful tools to help job seeking clients move into employment
Recently Workforce Planning Hamilton created two companion pieces to a larger report called "Putting the Puzzle Together: Skills Alignment in Hamilton's Transforming Economy. Both of these handouts will be useful to employment, career, and guidance counsellors.
"Viewing your job as a set of transferable skills" helps individuals to define transferable skills, to determine their own transferable skills which they have developed through previous work experience, and to understand how similar skills are used in different jobs and industries. Handy essestial skills and transferable skills worksheets allows job seekers to get their skills down on paper. Tips are also given on how to market one's transferable skills to a new employer.
"More than a job: Exploring career pathways in Hamilton" gives job seekers a game plan to navigate through Hamilton's evolving job market. Tips include: defining your interests, doing labour market research, thinking about opportunities for self-employment, determining educational requirements, upgrading other skills and training, and connecting with an employment counsellor.
New Employment Standards poster requirements now in effect
To help ensure that employers understand their obligations and that employees know their rights, the Minister of Labour has prepared and published an Employment Standards Poster entitled "Employment Standards in Ontario".
This poster describes important rights and requirements under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and
must be posted in the workplace where it is likely that employees will see it. As of May 20, 2015 employers are also required to give every employee a copy of the most recent version of the poster.
Direct employer access to 'Express Entry' applicants now available
Employers now have direct access to Express Entry (EE) applicants through Job Match, a revamped version of Job Bank, the federal government's job database. Job Match facilitates direct connections between employers and candidates. This follows the launch of EE earlier this year. EE is the federal government's new electronic application management system for recruiting highly skilled immigrants.
