January E-News - Issue 2                                                                January 18, 2016

During the cold winter months, we offer many indoor activities within our programs.  Teaching life skills while offering stimulating, challenging and interactive FUN activities is one of our many goals at SKSF.  It's an important part of program curriculum to have both children and adults enjoy themselves while learning at the same time.

In this month's E-News, we're bragging about some of these activities and offering different ways YOU can make a difference!  Thanks for taking the time to read...
SKSF PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
Manners Matter - Tea Anyone?

New Year's Eve is fun for everyone but the team at Zach's Place made it an opportunity to practice manners and work on part of the life skills curriculum with a special Tea Party as well. It was an  occasion for opposites as the Tea Party corresponded with Pajama Day.  The group spent their time in relaxed attire while practicing gracious attitudes using actual china dishes and a tea set.  Of course, pinkies were extended for added emphasis.

The kids had a choice of decaffeinated black tea or peppermint and cucumber sandwiches, which were made by the kids with staff help and a tasty success that will add them to many future eating activities.  Manners and appropriate table behavior are challenges that get a great deal of work at Zach's.  The group practiced putting their napkins in  their  laps, taking small bites, refraining from inappropriate bodily noises, and using proper serving utensils; even for the sugar cubes.  All this proper behavior had the kids spontaneously using British accents and it looked like a scene right out of My Fair Lady.  The activity was such a hit that the staff are planning another Tea Party to coincide with Valentine's Day.
Tastiest Field Trip EVER!

The kids from Zach's Place took a field trip to Amy's Donuts on East Fountain Blvd.  They learned how donuts are made and had the opportunity to top their own with a variety of frosting, sprinkles and toppings.  As an added treat, kids brought home an extra one to gobble up later.

Thanks to everyone at Amy's for making this such a special sweet treat.   Visit Amy's Donuts at:  http://www.amysdonuts.com.
New Decor At Adult Services

December and January have seen us sprucing up our digs at Adult Services.  We have a long list of thank yous to extend to all of the people and organizations that have donated new furniture to the Adult Services location on Nevada.  This has been a definite upgrade in interior design for our facility with many new leather sofas, chairs, tables, desks and recliners that have gone into both Joey's Place and the ICAN rooms.

A HUGE Thank You goes out to:  Miroslava Lipsky, Amber Kirt, Maria Swalley, Jane Lauderbaugh, Patricia Spiers, Joe Kissle, Mark Bryerton, Dawn Whiting, Randy & Valerie Newcomb, Brandon Barnett, Robert Keyser, Audrey SKrzelinski, Audrey Meza, Leilani Curtis, Gaith Garza and Barbara Stecklelberg.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Your sponsorship support allows us to serve as many families as possible at our Zach's Place program.   It allows us not to turn anyone away because of an inability to pay.  Because of the high demand of physical and emotional needs of children with special needs, parents, families and caretakers need a break.  They need respite time to rest and rejuvenate, spend time with other families members, attend education classes, pursue hobbies or other interests or just be able to work.

We are offering several SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES throughout the year to help support many of our events to help raise funds for our Zach's Place program.  If you are interested, contact Lisa Kalell, Fundraising/Event Coordinator at 719-447-8983 or [email protected].   Click here to print a Sponsorship Opportunities packet.

Sibshops is a monthly program run by SKSF connecting and supporting siblings of children with disabilities, helping them recognize a community of peers in similar situations.  Siblings of children with disabilities have challenges of their own, relating to others, working through the family dynamics and dealing with the realities of life with a disabled family member. Through fun and age appropriate activities with others in similar situations, they develop bonds, understanding and a support group all their own.

Advanced Registration is required and space is limited! Sibshops is sponsored by  The Arc Pikes Peak Region.
