A Case Study of a Prevented School Rampage Attack and Considerations for Directed Assault Prevention

Though there is little information available on prevented targeted violence at schools, the 2013 dissertation, Case Study of a Prevented School Rampage Attack at a Rural-Suburban High School, may assist in informing school leaders about rampage attacks. The dissertation, authored by Dr. Nicholas Morell, the dean of students at a public high school in Pennsylvania and a school safety researcher, describes a prevented school rampage attack at a rural-suburban high school and provides conclusions and recommendations that school officials can consider when reviewing individual school safety plans. Dr. Morell identifies best practices for preventing attacks in the article "13 Ways You Can Prevent a School Rampage" recently published by Campus Safety Magazine. Campus public safety officials may also benefit from reviewing Campus Attacks: Targeted Violence Affecting Institutions of Higher Education, an assessment of 272 incidents of violence that affected institutes of higher education (IHEs) in the United States between 1909 and 2008.
