Today, September 11th, is Patriot Day.  This is the solemn day on which we mark the anniversary of terrorist attacks on American soil in 2001.  We also pray for the 2,977 people who were murdered that day in New York.

So much going on! Let's take care of the events first of all so that you can fill in your calendar for September and October.

Monday, September 21st at the Maple River Restaurant is our last luncheon meeting for this year.  Check in between 11:00 and 11:30.  Cost is $16.  Speaker is Republican National Committeewoman Kathleen Berden who represents Michigan.  She can bring us up to date on the activities of the National Party and what we can expect in 2016.  We are very pleased to have her speak to us!

Monday, October 5th at 7:00 pm at the Northern Lights Recreation Center is our General Meeting.  Speaker Lee Chatfield will give his phenomenal presentation on Natural Law.  Lee is a great teacher as well as a very good legislator!

Why do we need to understand Natural Law, which has nothing to do with the laws of nature?  Author Robert P. George answers that perfectly in his article in the Fordham Law Review, Volume 69 | Issue 6 -
"Most modern commentators agree that the American founders were firm believers in natural law and sought to craft a constitution that would conform to its requirements, as they understood them, and embody its basic principles for the design of a just political order. The framers of the Constitution sought to create institutions and procedures that would afford respect and protection to those basic rights ("natural rights") that people possess, not as privileges or opportunities granted by the state, but as principles of natural law which it is the moral duty of the state to respect and protect."  To better understand our Constitution and why America  is so unique, be sure to attend Lee's lecture.

November 2nd is another date to mark in your calendar!  Brian Gutowski, Engineer/Manager from the Emmet County Road Commission will be our speaker.  Brian can answer your questions about road funding; Federal, State, County, township and city.  He can explain the process used to decide which roads get repaired and why some of our main roads are in such dire need of repair.  He can also tell us how to effectively get our road concerns to the right person in the Emmet County Road Commission.

The Election Committee continues to meet with prospective candidates for various offices; county commissioners, township supervisors and US Congressman.  Our Party is no longer simply donating money to candidates but are actively vetting new candidates as well as incumbents and supporting their campaign efforts.

Early in January, we'll begin putting together a strategy and a volunteer list for the many election year needs.  If anyone knows of office space that might be available for us to use as a center in Petoskey, please let me know.  We would be making phone calls, distributing signs and campaign literature and meeting with candidates in the space.  It needs to be easily accessed with parking nearby.  Free or extremely low rent is a necessity, since our budget is very low.

I've spoken to the State Party's representative about getting a Victory Center in Petoskey.  He said it's a possibility since they are trying to get one in every County this time.  If that happens, I believe the State Party helps out financially.  We can only hope!
So be thinking about how dedicated you are to helping with this important election and what exactly you would be willing to do.  I'll give everyone a specific list of needs in January.

Our County Party has made significant progress this first year after the reorganization!  Everyone doing what they are able to do, gets a lot done.  Thank you to everyone who has stepped forward and helped in any way!

I attended the Americans For Prosperity (AFP) conference in Columbus, Ohio August 21 and 22nd.  Five Presidential Candidates spoke and professionals from various fields were available for Break Out Sessions: talk radio hosts, economic leaders, political analysts, and many grassroots leaders.  Most were very impressed with Ted Cruz and Bobby Jindal.  It was very encouraging to be with 3600 Platform  Republicans!

Let's pray that we can energize Republicans in 2016!

Nancy Sarowski,
Chairman
