July 30: Herbal Mixology Series

with Glen Nagel, ND ('93). Continues August 13 and August 27. A blending of the ancient world of botanical medicine with the modern bar mixologist, emphasizing how to create flavorful, healthy drinks. Classes include lectures and hands-on projects that result in recipes and samples to take home. More info and registration.

 

 

APPLAUSE PLEASE - The annual Clap Out celebrating the home stretch for the Class of 2015, is Friday, June 19 at 10 a.m. The ceremony begins in Bill Mitchell Hall and wraps up with a celebratory toast in the Min Zidell Garden. (Staff photo, 2014)

Commencement Events Abound
 
John Weeks and 2015 Student Speakers Ashley Grimmel and Casey Carpenter

John Weeks, a leading advocate and resource on integrative health care, the executive director of the Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care and the publisher/editor of the Integrator Blog, is the keynote speaker at commencement. The event takes place Sunday, June 28, at the Oregon Convention Center, from 2 to 4:30 p.m.


Highlights-in addition to the parade of smiling, relieved graduates-will also include the presentation of Presidential Medallions to the family of naturopathic pioneer Benedict Lüst, DO, and the late Brent "Chris" Green, a prominent Iowa lawyer, naturopathic medicine advocate, and father of NCNM alumna Casey Green, ND ('07).

 

This year's student speakers include Rachel Neuendorf, School of Naturopathic Medicine; Ashley Grimmel, School of Research & Graduate Studies; and Casey Carpenter, representing the School of Classical Chinese Medicine.


Before things "commence" at the Convention Center, though, the fifth annual Min Zidell Garden Gala, this year entitled "Celebrating Unsung Heroes," is Friday, June 26, 5 to 9:30 p.m. Keynote speaker is NCNM Board Member Mohan Nair, chief innovation officer at Cambia Health Solutions. Details and ticket info here.Proud Family and Friends Day follows on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 6 p.m. Included are tours, an "NCNM Palooza" of food delights, Chalk Talks by NCNM faculty, and a reception with the president and Board of Directors from 5 to 6 p.m. More info and RSVP.

Faculty Members Receive Awards

Rihui Long, Heather Zwickey, Angela Senders, Michael McMahon, Nat Bingham

The Faculty Development Committee has chosen five faculty members for annual faculty awards, given for exceptional service to NCNM. Each will receive a $1,000 honorarium and a plaque to be presented at the September faculty meeting. Some 27 faculty members were nominated, with many receiving multiple nominations. This year's winners:

Rihui Long, Honored Veteran; Heather Zwickey, Teaching Excellence; Angela Senders, Research Excellence; Michael McMahon, Innovation in Classroom Teaching; Nat Bingham, Rookie of the Year. Congratulations!

 

Art for All: The NCNM Art Contest has concluded with ND and nutrition student Katie DeGroot taking first place with her photo "Mirror, Mirror on the Lake." Steve Dehner, staff, nabbed second place with a photo titled "Barcelona Sunset," and Crane Holmes, ND student, won third place with a photo called "Seaside Cows." Honorable mention went to Pauline Hoang, ND student, for her photo "Coastal Waters." All winning pieces are expected to be displayed in the Admin lobby this summer. Winners also received gift certificates from Dick Blick Art Materials.

 

New Student Leaders: ND and MSiMR student Josh Corn has been re-elected for another term as president of the Student Government Association. Other officers include ND student Paul Miszczyszyn, vice president; ND student Erin Carner, treasurer; ND and CCM student Sarah Kashdan, secretary; ND student Dan Reed, judiciary liaison. ND student Brook Ahnemann is the senior board of directors' liaison, and ND and CCM student Dylan Shanahan is the junior board of directors' liaison. Way to go!

 

Speaking of Elections: The staff has elected new Staff Association officers, including Sandra Brydson, Human Resources, president; Teale Niles, community clinics coordinator, vice president; Bob Jackson, accounts receivable/student transactions, treasurer; Shantelly Miles, clinic services representative, secretary; Sarah Hammer, clinic TB coordinator, board liaison. Congrats! BTW, the association welcomes all to its monthly meetings. 

 

NCNM in the News
 

Portland Business Journal reporter Elizabeth Hayes reports on Erin Moore, ND ('14), who survived the 7.8 earthquake in Nepal while working in the remote village of Karmidanda: "A Portland naturopath's unexpected aid work in Nepal." Moore has set up a  YouCaring page to support the people of the village.

Congratulations to NCNM community members honored at the recent Making a Difference awards event! Of special note: Associate Professor Dohn Kruschwitz, from the School of Naturopathic medicine, received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the event. Congrats, Dohn!

Ross Island Bridge Painting: ODOT now says the blue paint will be going on the bridge sometime in July, with work proceeding through the summer. No traffic impacts are anticipated, but some noise, dust, etc., could occur.   More info  

 


  

Rachel Neuendorf was chosen by her fellow ND students to speak at commencement on behalf of the class. She is scheduled to receive Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (with honors) and Master of Science in Integrative Medicine Research degrees (with honors). Her ND studies focused on family medicine. On the research side, she was the primary investigator for a study on mood and anxiety disorders in Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients, and a study investigating the use of mind-body interventions for sleep disturbances, the latter to be published in an alternative medicine journal. She also assisted on a review of the use of CAM for PTSD and was the co-author of an article on the study. After graduation, she will be a resident at NCNM's teaching clinics. 

 

Comings & Goings

 

Congratulations to Brenda Sodowsky, who has been promoted from clinic services supervisor to director of clinic services & information center, a new position at NCNM. Brenda and her staff will soon be launching NCNM's new Information Center, which will provide campus telephone reception, and responsibility for medical reception, patient appointments, and cashiering and customer service for the NCNM Clinic. Welcome to Alice Franke, who has joined Admissions as the events and activities manager, and Ayasha Shamsud-Din, Student Life, the new intercultural engagement and support manager. Also welcome to Leslie Bottomly, adjunct faculty in the ND program, and Brian Landever, Advancement's new Galen's Way Garden curator and campus beekeeper!
