A Festival of Murals

From Creative Loafing: SHINE mural festival is aglow in St. Pete

The murals are becoming landmarks around the city. The city supports the murals as long as they do not include advertising and as long as they are done legally with the building or business owner's permission. No longer confined to the few blocks downtown, murals are being done in all five of the arts districts -- The Grand Central District, The Warehouse Arts District, The Edge, The Waterfront Arts District and the Central Arts District - that make up "one great arts destination."

North Shore Pool: a sustainability leader

From the Tampa Bay Times:
St. Petersburg's North Shore Pool poster child of sustainability

North Shore Aquatic Complex, which claims bragging rights for its Olympic training facilities, now also can boast of its sustainability efforts.

New energy-saving geothermal and filtration systems and solar power have put the facility at the forefront of Mayor Rick Kriseman's recently announced initiatives to make St. Petersburg an even greener city.

"It's probably one of the most successful sustainability efforts the city has done to date," said parks and recreation director Michael Jefferis of the $400,000 project.

The Weekly Challenger: Ya La'Ford brings sunshine to St. Pete

The walls of downtown St. Pete are getting a makeover.

With the SHINE Mural Festival in its inaugural year, multiple artists are contributing their stylistic strokes and fanciful flourishes to the exterior walls in the Central Avenue corridor. Tampa Bay Times: Editorial: St. Petersburg should nurture IndyCar race

Imagine this. For a modest investment of $150,000, the city of St. Petersburg draws 160,000 race fans to its downtown waterfront. Tampa Bay gets tens of thousands of hotel nights, millions in economic impact and hours of worldwide television exposure for the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Yet a City Council with a chip on its shoulder questions whether it is worth the money, offends the well-respected race organizers and jeopardizes the future of an event that took years to establish and that other cities would beg to attract.
