Beautifully written, insightful and funny,Separation Anxiety chronicles the pivotal moments in a woman's life where she lets go of her childhood beliefs about happily ever after, and discovers her true self.

The Witches:
Salem, 1692
by Stacy Schiff

*BARB'S PICK*
"This is a monumental writing achievement by historian Stacy Schiff, author of
Cleopatra, a book I absolutely loved because of its historical authenticity, breadth of story, and amazing word craft.

I found this book a harrowing read at times, revealing an historical record that almost defies believability.

And yet, counterbalancing this dark and worrying historical record is the astonishing and breathtakingly beautiful writing of this fabulous author historian. I marvel at passages such as this:
"Rumor was the other nimble traveller, . . . a lightfooted fugitive from lumbering truth."

The Little Paris Bookshop
by Nina George

*JAN'S PICK*

Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can't seem to heal through literature is himself; he's still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

"My favourite kind of book --- it made me laugh (out loud in public), it made me cry, it made me want to give a copy to all of my closest friends.   An eloquent story of grief and a love letter to the written word and how it can save us in our darkest hours."

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend
 by Katarina Bivald

*TINA'S PICK*

It all began with a correspondence between two quite different women: 28-year-old Sara from Haninge, Sweden, and 65-year-old Amy from the small town of Broken Wheel, Iowa. After years of exchanging books, letters and thoughts on the meaning of literature and life, Sara, mousy, disheveled, who has never been anywhere in her life, has really lived only for her work in a beloved bookshop, which has just closed its doors for the last time, bravely decides to accept her unknown friend's invitation to visit. But when she arrives, she finds her house empty, the funeral guests just heading home. . .

"This is a gentle read involving a cast of quirky characters, a bookshop, and a small town! If you are looking for some light reading that keeps you engaged, this may be for you."

The Gold Eaters
by Ronald Wright

*TOM'S PICK*

Kidnapped at sea by conquistadors seeking the golden land of Peru, a young Inca boy named Waman is the everyman thrown into extraordinary circumstances.

Forced to become Francisco Pizarro's translator, he finds himself caught up in one of history's great clashes of civilizations, the Spanish invasion of the Inca Empire in the 1530s.

To survive, he must not only learn political gamesmanship but also discover who he truly is, and in what country and culture he belongs. Only then can he find and be reunited with the love of his life and begin the search for his shattered family, journeying through a land and a time vividly portrayed.

The EcoNest Home
by Paula Baker-Laporte
 & Robert Laporte

*LEIGH'S PICK*

An EcoNest is not just a home - it is a breathtakingly beautiful structure that nurtures health and embraces ecology. This unique approach to construction combines light clay straw, timber framing, earthen floors, natural plasters, and other natural techniques with the principles of Building Biology to create a handcrafted living sanctuary.

"I loved the purity and relevance of construction design and materials, which produce beautiful results."

The Mountain Shadow
by Gregory David Roberts

It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life. But Lin can't leave the Island City: Karla, and a fatal promise, won't let him go.

Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights
by Salman Rushdie
Fiction

Inspired by 2,000 years of storytelling yet rooted in the concerns of our present moment, this is a spectacular achievement,  enchanting, both very funny and terrifying. It is narrated by our descendants 1000 years hence, looking back.

Nothing less than the survival of our world is at stake. Only one, a djinn princess who centuries before had learned to love humankind, resolves to help us: in the face of dynastic intrigue, she raises an army composed of her semi-magical great-great grandchildren, a motley crew of endearing characters who come together to save the world in a battle waged for 1,001 nights or, to be precise, two years, eight months and twenty-eight nights.
That Lonely Section of Hell: The Botched Investigation of a Serial Killer Who Almost Got Away
by Lori Shenher
Biography

An ex-police detective's searing personal account of sexism, racism, and mishandling in the investigation of missing and murdered women. Police detective Lori Shenher describes her role in Vancouver's infamous Missing and Murdered Women Investigation and her years-long struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of her work on the case.

From her first assignment in 1998 to explore an increase in the number of missing women to the harrowing 2002 interrogation of convicted serial killer Robert Pickton, Shenher tells a story of massive police failure-failure of the police to use the information about Pickton available to them, failure to understand the dark world of drug addiction and sex work, and failure to save more women from their killer.

Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things
by Jenny Lawson
Biography

As Jenny says  :
Some people might think that being 'furiously happy' is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he's never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos.

The Prison Book Club
by Ann Walmsley
Biography

A daring journalist goes behind bars to explore the redemptive power of books with bikers, bank robbers, and gunmen.

An attack in London left Ann Walmsley unable to walk alone down the street, and shook her belief in the fundamental goodness of people. A few years later, when a friend asked her to participate in a bold new venture in a men's medium security prison, Ann had to weigh her curiosity and desire to be of service against her anxiety and fear.

Stranger Than We Can Imagine: An Alternative History of the 20th Century
by John Higgs
History

Before 1900, history was an account of great discoveries that actually made sense. People understand innovations like the steam engine, agriculture, or electricity. The twentieth century, by contrast, gave us quantum entanglement, cubism, relativity, psychedelics, postmodernism, chaos maths, and the Somme.

This is the story of that confusing century as told through the ideas produced at the furthest fringes of our sciences, arts, and culture.
