Generation Schools Network Releases New White Paper on Social and Emotional Learning

Generation Schools Network released a new white paper on the benefits of Social Emotional Learning.  The Generation Schools Network Model continues to seek to address the "whole student" by including a school embedded health and wellness program that captures aspects of SEL and more, incorporating elements of counseling, social work, social service delivery, physical health, exercise, goal setting and monitoring, crisis intervention, and college/career transition planning support. Indeed, few education reform models have embraced the concept of addressing the "whole student" more than the Generation Schools Network Model.

Brooklyn Generation School Mock Interview Day a Success!

Last week BGS held a successful mock interview event! The school hosted nine professionals including seven from Franklin Templeton/Fiduciary Trust Company International,
with whom the school has had a multiyear relationship, and one from the Brooklyn Navy Yards.

The event included a resume workshop and three rounds of mock interviews. The students were enthusiastic and appreciative. The adults thought the students were "awesome" and "impressive". In fact, five students were invited to interviews at the Brooklyn Navy Yards and three of these were offered positions!

This was a great experience for the students and the adults, and helped to build upon and build anew relationships between GSN, the professionals and their organizations.  Most importantly, it provided students with meaningful experiences and opportunities.

Thank you to all the staff, teachers, volunteers, and students for your participation and enthusiasm!
Generation Schools Network Collaborates with Rise Above Colorado on a Substance Abuse Prevention Program

Generation Schools Network recently collaborated with Rise Above Colorado on a substance abuse prevention program funded by the state SAPI grant. As a part of this collaboration, West Generation Academy students engaged in a substance abuse prevention and media literacy class. Throughout the course, students gained an increased awareness of the harm of prescription drug misuse and the ability to analyze the media that surrounds them and how it influences their choices.

As a culmination of the program the students created an incredible mural, about what they learned in class.  The mural can be seen in person at the southeast alley of 9th and Santa Fe in Denver.

It was a pleasure to work with those from Rise Above Colorado and we look forward to future collaboration. Thanks to all for their hard work in making this a success for our students!

Brooklyn Generation School Student Awarded Scholarship to College of Choice

As you read a few weeks ago, students and parents from Brooklyn Generation School visited a range of colleges. We are glad to give this update on one of the students who participated in that college tour!

Andrew originally planned to attend another SUNY school, but when he visited Daemen College in Buffalo, he discovered he liked the campus and the programs they offered. He was able to talk with an admissions officer while on the campus, and asked to apply even though he thought it might be too late to do so. Not only did he apply, but he was accepted. Not only was he accepted, he recently found out that he received a significant scholarship and financial aide package to attend!

We're very proud of Andrew and his accomplishments. He was one of this year's CARA youth leaders, and he also presented on behalf of the partnership at this year's Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC) Conference a few weeks ago. More so, he saw an opportunity and pursued it. He is well prepared to take advantage of this college opportunity and make the best of the next four years at Daemen.

Please join us in wishing him good luck!
