A Note from the Editor:

As we enter the third year of publishing our Academics in Action newsletter, we have added some new features. We will continue to share wonderful information about what Pardes students are learning; however, this year, each issue beginning in October will focus on one subject area and the incredible learning taking place at all grade levels. Additionally, please be sure to check out our monthly Did You Know section, which will provide you with some other interesting information about learning taking place at Pardes. And of course, we will continue with our monthly Alumni Spotlights and Mathematics Olympiad questions. If you answer the question correctly, we will list you in the next issue of Academics in Action !

Happy Reading!

 Did you know?
Walk into any classroom at Pardes and you will see incredible learning taking place, whether it is through whole class or small group discussions,  experiments,  projects or writing.  Pardes students are truly learning to think critically and look beyond the surface level of the information.  The Did You Know? section of Academics in Action will give you a quick snapshot into some of these activities at Pardes. This first issue includes an expanded section highlighting the incredible critical thinking and depth of learning taking place in just these first few weeks.  Did you know....

  • Did you know that our kindergartners have been studying the five senses of Rosh Hashanah?
  • Did you know that our kindergartners just started writing workshop and their first theme is We Are All Writers?
  • Did you know that kindergartners have learned that we read and write Hebrew from the opposite way that we read and write English?

  • Did you know that our first graders are learning how to read a one paragraph Hebrew story?  They demonstrate their comprehension through interactive activities.
  • Did you know that we have been in school for 21 days on September 9th?  Each day first graders work with place value (tens and ones) during calendar time.  Students are able to apply the days of school to place value concept--real life learning!!

  • Did you know that our fourth graders are getting ready to embark on a journey across the United States? Their first stop is the Northeast region!
  • Did you know that our fourth graders are writing realistic fiction stories? They are drafting scenes using a storyteller's voice rather than reporting what has happened.
  • Did you know that our fourth graders are making mental movies in their head as they read? They are practically acting out the scene as they read envisioning what the characters are thinking, feeling and wondering.
  • Did you know that very soon our fifth graders will be building bridges using the scientific method to discover which bridge can best withstand weight?
  • Did you know that in Jewish Studies the fifth graders wrote parodies to popular songs to demonstrate their understanding of the story of Moses and the Taskmaster?
  • Did you know that the fifth and sixth grade Math 2 students (seventh grade level math) are learning to calculate tips?
  • Did you know that our sixth grade science students analyzed a MythBusters episode to determine how it followed the scientific method? They also identified the independent and dependent variables, graphed the results, and discussed how they would have performed the experiment differently to improve accuracy and precision.
  • Did you know that students in sixth grade Humanities are busy learning about Reader's and Writer's workshop, using strategies like flagging to push their thinking to the next level?
  • Did you know that students in seventh grade Humanities have just written their first paper about the fall of Rome?
  • Did you know the seventh graders will be reading one of the oldest known pieces of literature written in Old English, Beowulf?
  • Did you know that the seventh graders are studying the life cycle and how it affects the world around them?Did you know the eighth grade Geometry students are learning to write mathematical proofs?
  • Did you know that the eighth graders can explain how the Electoral College works and if they agree with it or not?
  • Did you know the eighth graders are learning to write detailed literary analysis essays about stories written by great authors, such as Langston Hughes, Guy Maupassant, Edgar Allen Poe, and O. Henry?
  • Did you know that Middle School students in the e-journalism elective recently interviewed a professional television journalist via FaceTime and learned tips for working in the business? They are currently finishing their pieces for this year's first issue of The Panther Post.

Problem of the Month

For the first time ever, Pardes will sponsor an elementary team composed of students in grades 4-5 to complement the existing Mathematical Olympiads Middle School Team.  These elementary Mathletes will compete with students from across the USA, Canada,
and other countries around the globe.  Below is a sample of a word problem they are likely to encounter.

In the multiplication problem at the right,                      MATH

each letter represents a different digit.  What                     X 4

4 -digit number is represented by MATH?                     HTAM

"We have been so successful at the Middle School level, " said Mitch Flatow, Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs,"that we are hoping our emerging mathematicians will enjoy the five competitions and make us equally proud."

If you are able to complete this problem, please email your response to Bethany Spector at [email protected] by noon on Friday, September 11th.

Go Pardes Mathletes!
