The devastation of the 1,000-year flood that fiercely swept over South Carolina last month continues to be felt far and wide. The Richland County Coroner said
first responders did a heroic job. While 12 people drowned and seven others died in weather-related traffic wrecks, no one died in a home in South Carolina. The state counted almost 1,500 rescue missions. Local firefighters likely rescued hundreds more by boats, ropes and helicopters. The Burn Foundation is no stranger to the heroism of SC firefighters. In this issue you'll read about one in particular, Eddie Turner. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with our friends in Carolina.

Chief Joel "Eddie" Turner, (Ret.) was recently presented the South Carolina Order of the Silver Crescent, the state's highest civilian award for significant contributions, leadership, volunteerism, and lifelong influence.
Staff members of the Burn Foundation
attended the ceremony in Lexington, S.C. to congratulate Chief Turner, a past member of the Burn Foundation's Board of Directors. Chief Turner, a man of few words and never one to draw attention to his own good accomplishments, stood quietly by as a list of dignitaries made comments about his influence on young firefighters, his contributions to the SC State Firefighters Association, Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation, and his local community. A legislative delegation representing Gov. Haley presented the coveted award.
Chief Turner's passion for the mission of the Burn Foundation and concern for the patients and families that we serve is evident. When his Burn Foundation board term ended in 2010, he was elected as an Emeriti member and continues to be a generous supporter. In 2012 at the Heroes Banquet, we recognized Chief Turner and the community of Lexington, S.C. for their decade-long efforts in raising over $1 million for the Burn Foundation. Most of those funds were raised through the annual boot drive coordinated by him in memory of Lexington County firefighter, Jeffrey Vaden Chavis, who died in 2001 following injuries sustained in a fire. Chief Turner organized the first boot drive and at his retirement from fire service in 2014, he handed the "boot" over to a younger firefighter, Antoine Kelly, whom he had carefully groomed for the role. Antoine expanded Lexington County's efforts this year to include the annual boot drive and the Fallen Firemen 5k. Chief Turner's legacy continues. On behalf of the burn patients and families who have been the beneficiary of his countless acts of kindness and leadership, we congratulate Chief Joel "Eddie" Turner, recipient of The Order of the Silver Crescent.

Christine "Granny Bull" Bullington
|
Faith and family are so important to Christine Bullington that when her son-in-law, Patrick Judy, was a patient at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, she didn't think twice about leaving her home in Albany, GA, and joining her daughter, Pam, in Augusta to offer support during Patrick's month long treatment. "Granny Bull" as she is affectionately known, is the matriarch of five children, 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren has nothing but praise for the Burn Foundation and Chavis House.
"Pam and I stayed in the Retreat (Chavis House) and couldn't have been treated any nicer. It's a wonderful place; they treat you with love and respect. All the church people who bring meals are so good and kind. It's truly a God sent blessing," said Granny Bull.
Back home in Albany, Granny Bull, 87-years-young, is a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church, where she sings in the choir and is part of a trio called the Liberty Belles with Miriam Humphreys and Sheryl Phillips, mother of American Idol winner, Philip Phillips. She credits God with her long life and good health.
