What's new at SAS?
STEAM Lab & Makerspace

New to the St. Andrew's Lower School this year are two STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Labs, also known as Makerspaces, in which students learn through various hands-on projects.

Facilitated by Kama Bruce, Head of Lower School, and Geoff Harrison, Director of Curriculum, the focus is on the students' problem solving process, not their final product. As such, work performed in the labs is not graded. The goal is to instill in students the confidence to take the lead in a task, make and learn from mistakes, and take ownership of their work. This year students will choose a problem to solve and then determine--on their own--whether they need to work in groups to find the best solution. Ultimately, we aim to create a safe and fun space for students to create, explore, and learn.

In the next issue:  The Innovation Center at the Upper School.

Clockwise from top left: Lower School students work together to build a tower, as tall as they can, out of raw pasta and marshmallows in the STEAM Lab; fifth grade students continue their study of the color wheel and color relationships as they work on their still-life flower paintings; Coalition for the Environment students gather and separate trash into compost with the goal of limiting landfill trash to one bag per week at the Upper School; Upper School Football Coach Ty Detmer and Heisman Trophy Winner Ricky Williams visit the Middle School football team and provide words of encouragement.
