Rebuilding the Neighborhood

In the Presbytery of Baltimore, The Commission on Reconciliation, two Ministry Groups and an Ad Hoc Team have been diligently striving over the summer to address issues of race, class and poverty in Baltimore. Many announcements will be made in coming months about the fruits of that work. The In The Loop Ministry Group is offering a Summit in the City on October 10 (see invitation below). The Uptown Metro Ministry Group has, for the past year, financially supported the position of Community Organizer in the McCabe-Woodbourne neighborhood as well as actively participated in the amazing work that Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity has been doing in that neighborhood.
We are pleased to announce that our Chesapeake Habitat partners are hosting Antero Pietila, author of "Not in My Neighborhood: How Bigotry Shaped a Great American City" on September 17. Mr. Pietila's book is described as follows:
"Baltimore is the setting for (and typifies) one of the most penetrating examinations of bigotry and residential segregation ever published in the United States. Antero Pietila shows how continued discrimination practices toward African Americans and Jews have shaped the cities in which we now live. Eugenics, racial thinking, and white supremacist attitudes influenced even the federal government's actions toward housing in the 20th century, dooming American cities to ghettoization. This all-American tale is told through the prism of Baltimore, from its early suburbanization in the 1880s to the consequences of "white flight" after World War II, and into the first decade of the twenty-first century. The events are real, and so are the heroes and villains. Mr. Pietila's engrossing story is an eye-opening journey into city blocks and neighborhoods, shady practices, and ruthless promoters."

, Presbytery's Commission on Thriving Congregations will be hosting
"COME AND SEE" -
an informational luncheon for congregational leaders desiring to know more about the PCUSA's New Beginnings resources. The event will take place at Brown Memorial Woodbrook Church, 6200 North Charles Street, Baltimore. A light lunch will be served at noon, and then Clark Cowden, a member of our denomination's New Beginnings staff, will offer an overview of New Beginnings resources and address any questions that arise.

Board of Pensions' Call to Health initiative is one way we can each demonstrate our respect and gratitude for God's gift of life and support our obligation to care for ourselves and those we love and serve. Last year, 53.5% of plan members in the Presbytery of Baltimore completed Call to Health. This year, the goal is 50% or more.
