Re-Imagining
the Work of Spiritual Leadership

Just so you know where I am heading with this, I am going to conclude by promoting a workshop entitled "Re-Imagining The Work of Spiritual Leadership" on Oct. 17. Skip ahead if you will, but you might be interested in some background first.
In December 2012 I read an article in The Christian Century that made a tremendous impact on me. Co-authored by Roger Owens and Anthony Robinson, the article was entitled "Dark Night of the Church" - inspired by the classic "Dark Night of The Soul" penned by St. John of the Cross.
While we have all been awash with articles talking about the decline of the church from a sociological perspective - not to mention articles on "5 Easy Steps to Turn Your Church Around" - this article was very, very different.

Rather than offering simplistic explanations, this article spoke to my soul. It represents a shift from a sociological narrative to a theological narrative. "For John of the Cross, the dark night of the soul was an experience - or absence of an experience - that God initiates and works in human persons in order to help them realize their fundamental union with God and liberate them for the perfect love of God and neighbor." The article expands on this while reflecting on the overall experience of the church these days. Could it be that this "darkness" is actually a kind of light?
While I won't go into more detail on that article now, I can see now that this article was profoundly significant in shaping my theological imagination as a leader in the church. Dr. Roger Owens, one of the authors of this article, and Associate Professor of Leadership and Ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, will be our workshop leader on Oct. 17, at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center in Columbia, MD., from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM. He will be helping us develop our biblical and theological imagination and learn how to create space to discern God's leading.

Light Street Presbyterian Church's Session has approved plans to host a weekly Farmer's Market in Federal Hill. Plans for the Federal Hill Farmers'Market include hosting 6-12 vendors weekly throughout the year. The market will open on Saturdays, from 2:30 - 5pm, beginning Oct. 24.
