Reflects on Summer Camp Experience

by Cerys Beckwith, 18
Ashland Presbyterian Church

Had I been told four years ago that the highlight of my high school summers would be weeklong trips to obscure states such as South Dakota and Minnesota, I likely would have scoffed. As a freshman in high school, I had only travelled an hour or two by car away from my home without my family at my side. The thought of being on a plane heading miles across the United States with complete strangers was daunting, at the time.

Now, this trip has become an experience that I look forward to with much anticipation each year. This past summer, I spent my fourth Baltimore Dakota Learning Camps (BDLC) trip on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. After skipping a summer in the grasslands - opting to spend my time in Pejuhatazizi in Minnesota the year prior - I could not have been happier to be back. This time around, I buzzed with excitement as our group, primarily Presbyterians from Highland Presbyterian Church in Street, MD (though, I come from Ashland Presbyterian Church in the Hunt Valley area) made the eight-hour trek from Colorado to South Dakota.

Once here, we set to work immediately. Joan Pugh, who graciously coordinated the camp activities for the week, distributed assignments. Over the weekend we cleaned, cooked, explored,
Teen volunteers and campers
adapted and prepared for what we all knew would be a challenging week
, both physically and emotionally. As I joined in the flurry of organizing and preparation, I too prepared for the excitement and joy that I knew would come from seeing the kids once again.

Before I knew it, kids were piling into our vans and we were shuttling them back to the camp. Here, they gobbled down breakfast while we counselors scrambled to prepare for the day. When describing a regular day at camp - from corralling  swarms of children, to helping the younger kids eat lunch, to engaging all ages in science experiments, to endless piggyback rides under the hot summer sun - to friends and family, our days appeared chaotic and endless. But despite the running about, the children tugging and tackling you, and the relentless heat, there are countless moments that make camp worth the exhaustion: a little boy falling asleep in your arms while you run a station; another plopping down in your lap during opening circle; two girls taking your hands and pulling you outside to play.

Every year, I return from my BDLC trips exhaus ted, ready to sleep for days on end. But the more often I travel to the reservations, the more of my heart stays with the Lakota people, the culture, and of course, the children. My time with BDLC has been vigorous and trying, but ultimately, rewarding in unimaginable ways. Already, as I enter my first year at college and prepare for new journeys that life may lay before me, I cannot wait to hear the 4am alarm clock next July that signals my departure out West again.
