Greenhouse Innovation Center offers preview event
|
On May 18, visitors were given a preview of UNL's new state-of-the-art greenhouse facility at Nebraska Innovation Campus in conjunction with Fascination of Plants Day 2015. The facility's new phenotyping system has potential to greatly advance the university's plant science research and open new opportunities for private sector collaborations.

Nebraska Research Initiative to help fund equipment at NIC
|
The Nebraska Research Initiative (NRI) has approved a $1 million proposal from the UNL Department of Food Science and Technology and The Food Processing Center to help purchase equipment for the Food Innovation Center pilot plant at Nebraska Innovation Campus. The new equipment will advance The Food Processing Center's ability to serve industry partners, entrepreneurs and others in the state. NRI, a state-funded program created in 1988 to build research capacity and expertise at the university, funds proposals across the four NU campuses on a competitive basis.

Albright delivers food workshop keynote

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright visited Nebraska Innovation Campus on May 18 to deliver a keynote address during the Food Factory of the Future Workshop, presented by UNL; University of California, Davis; ConAgra Foods; and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her talk, "Feeding a Global Population," covered current global food needs and America's role in finding solutions. Water for Food's Director of Policy Nick Brozovic presented at the workshop.

The Water for Food Institute is pleased to introduce, "Nebraska's Natural Resources Districts: An Assessment of a Large-Scale Locally Controlled Water Governance Framework," by Ann Bleed, Ph.D., P.E. Emeritus, and Christina Hoffman Babbitt, Ph.D. This new policy report showcases Nebraska's long history of groundwater management and offers lessons learned that will be helpful to others working on water policies around the world.

The Water for Food Institute is also pleased to share the Proceedings of the 2014 Water for Food Global Conference, held in association with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Oct. 19-22, in Seattle, Washington, USA. The report summarizes the presentations and discussions that took place surrounding the theme: "Harnessing the Data Revolution: Ensuring Water and Food Security from Field to Global Scales."

Partnerships pave the way to innovative solutions for water and food security
By 2050, there will be nearly 10 billion people to feed on this planet. As a result of population increases and rising incomes, total food demand will likely double by 2050. Water for Food's Roberto Lenton and Molly Nance explore how partnerships help provide solutions to this challenge.

At the 7th World Water Forum, the world's top researchers and leaders in the water and food sectors gathered to share ideas and progress toward ensuring a water and secure future. Roberto Lenton participated in a high level panel on Water for Food Security and contributed to the white paper, "Towards a Water and Food Secure Future: Critical Perspectives for Policy-makers."

Laura Gonz?lez G?mez, visiting scholar
Water for Food Institute

 Laura Gonz?lez G?mez is a PhD student at the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Albacete, Spain. With funding from her university, Laura is working with the Water for Food Institute's Director of Research Christopher Neale as a visiting scholar from April to July.
She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in agronomy and is now conducting research on the assimilation of remote sensing data into crop growth and production models in southeast Spain. The final objective of her project is to gain an estimation of actual yield for grain crops and to learn more about water and fertilization efficiency in irrigated and rainfed crops. Ultimately, Laura hopes to improve her knowledge in remote sensing and production models.

Global Innovation Fund
Social Innovations for the Developing World
The Global Innovation Fund aims to fund innovative and cost-effective solutions that address any major development challenge in any country (or in multiple countries) of the developing world.
Award amount: Grants, loans, and equity investments, ranging from $50,000-15,000,000
Eligibility: Individuals, non-profit organizations, for-profit companies, governments, and universities
Due date: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis (no calendar deadline)
Tinker Foundation
Sustainable Resource Management in Latin America
Tinker's program of Institutional Grants supports the theme of sustainable resource management (among others) in Latin America. Particular issues of interest include sustainable agriculture. The Foundation also very interested in issues of water scarcity and quality for communities. The Foundation encourages project collaboration among organizations in the U.S. and Latin America. Brief letters of inquiry to the Foundation are required before proposals are prepared and submitted.
Award amount: $100,000-500,000
Eligibility: Not-for-profit organizations and universities in the U.S., Latin America, and abroad
Due date: March 1 and Sept. 15 of each year
