John Kolkman, Research Coordinator with the Edmonton Social Planning Council, will speak about a recent report A Profile of Poverty in Edmonton (Jan. 2015) developed by the Edmonton Social Planning Council and use demographics and statistics to focus on Edmonton seniors. Round table conversations will allow participants to further discuss the issue based on their experiences with the Edmonton seniors community.

WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON AGING: LONG-TERM SERVICES AND SUPPORTS POLICY BRIEF

The second Whitehouse Conference on Aging policy brief has been released. This brief focuses on long-term services and supports for basic daily living activities which help older adults remain independent in their own homes. The web page also includes discussion questions related to this issue and comments received in response to the brief.

OLDER ADULT SERVICES SPECIALIST

Family and Community Services, County of Strathcona


Responsibilities of this position include: 
  • Identify needs of older adults, monitor emerging trends, research best practices in the field of seniors practice 
  • Develop, promote, implement and evaluate programs that promote healthy aging within a community setting 
  • Collaborate with multi-agency and inter-departmental groups 
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteers 
  • Provide community information to agencies and local groups to increase awareness and understanding of issues affecting older adults, department initiatives and services available to older adults in Strathcona County

Desired qualifications include: 
  • Post-secondary degree in a Human Services field with a minimum of four years' experience working with older adults and issues related to older adults, program development and/or volunteer management 
  • Client-centered, non-judgmental approach to service delivery
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively 
  • Interpersonal and networking skills

PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Edmonton Meals on Wheels

Edmonton Meals on Wheels is recruiting a temporary, full-time Program Coordinator for a one year contract to develop a program that will enhance our Grocery Bag™ grocery delivery service.  The successful applicant will be responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating the new and exciting Store Through Door® program which will match clients with volunteers who will provide personalized shopping services for people with limited community support. The Coordinator will develop policy, standards and processes to successfully implement and match clients with volunteer grocery shoppers and will be responsible for the daily delivering of Chef's Choice hot meals with a company vehicle on an extended delivery route. 

This position is ideal for someone who is experienced in program development and understands process development. Idea candidates will be detail orientated and work successfully under tight timelines with excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills. You display exceptional communication skills and initiative. Post-secondary education in business, marketing or non-profit management is preferable. Experience or understanding of the voluntary sector, volunteer engagement and working with seniors or disabled persons are an asset.

RESEARCH STUDY FOR CAREGIVERS
University of Alberta

This study explores what it means to receive home care services and be a primary caregiver for a family member. The study information will be used to increase understanding about home care and inform home care and caregiving policy. Caregivers are invited to participate in an arts-based workshop (June 12 or 18), create a collage, complete a survey, and take part in an interview. To participate you must be a primary caregiver for a family member and receive home care services. 

 
If you would like to share your caregiving story, meet with other caregivers, and create a collage through this research study, please contact Kelly (Research Assistant), in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta at 780-492-5914.
