CATCH a Great Training at
Rainbow Fleet

Happy February,

We have some exciting news to announce this month, so let's get right to it.

Rainbow Fleet is partnering with the Oklahoma City/County Health Department to bring the CATCH Kids Club program to our child care providers. This innovative program has three components, physical activity, healthy habits and nutrition and family involvement, and comes with activities, sample plans, lessons, scripts, tip sheets and more. It's based on the Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) program and designed to be fun for kids and providers.

Trainings for the program will begin soon, so keep an eye on the schedule. You're going to love this program.

As, I'm sure you know, our state's legislature convened its annual session this month. In order to keep our lawmakers informed on issues impacting child care and child care providers, we're asking for providers' help in gathering private-pay enrollment information. Please fill out the attached form and return by email, fax or mail. We can also help you complete the form over the phone or in person.

We realize you're busy, so as a thank you to all who participate, we'll be giving away some great prizes. Every provider who completes the information form will be entered into a drawing to win a Resource Center membership, a free training or a basket of learning materials.

One of the great things about Rainbow Fleet is working alongside a wonderful group of volunteers and supporters who serve on our board of directors. The board recently elected the officer group that will lead our agency in 2015.

Mike Gibson, a partner at McGladrey, LLP, has been elected board president. Becky Roten, a community leader, will serve as president-elect. Matilda Clements, community leader, has been elected secretary. Shelley Deck, vice-president of taxation and finance at American Fidelity Corporation, is will serve as treasurer.

We're fortunate to have an outstanding group of volunteers who serve on our board and are excited to have such a dynamic leadership team.

That's all for this month. Thanks for reading and for supporting Rainbow Fleet.

Respectfully,

Carrie Bullard

P.S.

Did you see a Rainbow Fleet story on TV or in print? We had a blast showing our Resource Center to KWTV and Telemundo. Our agency was also featured in the January issue of Linked Magazine. These stories have generated lots of interest in our agency and the services we provide. If you know of a parent or provider who is unfamiliar with Rainbow Fleet, please pass this email along and let them know that we're here to help.

Estimada Proveedoras:

informacin.

Notes from a Nurse

Preventing the spread of germs on surfaces

By Kristen Russell, RN, Immunization Nurse at the Cleveland County Health Department

Studies show that the most effective way to reduce the spread of germs is through frequent hand washing, but how does that translate into a child care setting? Young children love to wash their hands, but mainly to enjoy the bubbles and water play! Getting them to do it properly can sometimes take some effort. The trick to washing hands is lathering well and making sure to scrub for a full 20 seconds. For kids, it can b

e fun to sing Twinkle Twinkle all the way through twice while they scrub! And remember, if soap and water

are not available, use an alcohol-based wipe or hand gel.

In addition to hand washing, surfaces must be disinfected too.

Did you know?

  • Cold viruses can live on a surface for up to 7 days
  • Influenza viruses can live on surfaces 24 hours
  • RSV can survive on countertops for up to 6 hours
  • Salmonella and campylobacter can live for 1-4 hours on surfaces and fabrics
  • In one study, C difficile was shown to survive for five months on surfaces
  • MRSA can survive for days to weeks on a surface

Cleaning and/or disinfecting surfaces

Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing. Cleaning removes germs from surfaces - whereas disinfecting actually
destroys them. While surfaces may
look clean, many infectious germs may be lurking around. Disinfectants are specifically registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and contain ingredients that actually

destroy

bacteria and other germs. Check the product label to make sure it says "Disinfectant" and has an EPA registration number. Disinfect those areas where there can be large numbers of germs that can spread to others. If an EPA-registered disinfectant is not available, use a fresh chlorine bleach solution.

To make and use the solution:

  • Add 1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 quart (4 cups) of water. For a larger supply of disinfectant, add cup of bleach to 1 gallon (16 cups) of water.
  • Apply the solution to the surface with a cloth.
  • Let it stand for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Rinse the surface with clean water.
  • Discard this bleach solution after 24 hours!
