Customer Insight

Traveling Cardholders Should Take Precautions from Gas Station Skimmers

Gas station skimmers (sneaky devices that can be planted at the gas pump) are on the rise across the country. This fraud tactic steals card numbers and PINs on machines they're installed on. Whether you're traveling for vacation or fueling up near home, take these precautions against gas station skimmers.

1. Be aware of your surroundings. Check for good lighting conditions at the gas station, and the condition of the gas pumps themselves. Look for and report any signs of tampering or something out of place.

2. Make sure the gas pump dispenser cabinet is closed and has not been tampered with. Many stations are now putting security tape over the opening to alert users of tampering by unauthorized individuals.

3. Use the pump closest to the front of the store. Thieves often place skimmers at the gas pumps farther away from the store so they go unnoticed longer.

4. Monitor bank accounts regularly to spot any unauthorized charges. Sign up for FCCB's Fraud Text Alerts to detect any unauthorized activity here
