School's Out, Who Ate? 2015

In 2014, nearly two million of California's most vulnerable kids fell into the summer nutrition gap.

School's Out...Who Ate? is an annual report published by CFPA to examine the reach of federal summer meal programs across the state. The report released today describes a summer nutrition gap that spans nearly 2 million kids across the state. That means 80 percent of children who rely on the health and academic benefits of free or reduced-price lunches during the school year miss out on similar meals during the summer.

Children need consistent access to healthy meals that combat hunger and food insecurity, support year-round learning, and help prevent obesity. Learn what state and federal decision makers can do to ensure that all of California's kids have year-round access to critical nutrition resources.

Take Action, California! Tell Congress that Summer Hunger is Unacceptable!

After rigorous evaluation, the results are in - Summer EBT is a vital weapon in the fight against summer food insecurity. While we know that Summer EBT mitigates hunger and improves nutrition, California has yet to benefit from this innovative program. Last week, Representative Susan Davis (CA-53) and Senator Patty Murray (WA) introduced the Stop Child Summer Hunger Act of 2015 to ensure that Summer EBT reaches low-income children in California and across the country.

Programs that work should be put to work for California kids. Join us in asking California's members of Congress to co-sponsor this important legislation.

National Commission on Hunger Comes to CA

On Monday, the National Commission on Hunger held a hearing in Oakland, CA. California Food Policy Advocates, along with several of our state and regional partners, were asked to provide expert testimony to help inform the Commission's upcoming report to Congress on strategies to address hunger and food insecurity. CFPA's Tia Shimada used the opportunity to speak with the Commission about the millions of children in California who go without the nutritious meals they need to learn, grown, and achieve at their fullest potential. Tia cited the urgent need to implement and expand approaches that have proven effective, such as direct certification, Medi-Cal direct certification, Summer EBT, and after-the-bell breakfast.

Kudos to all of the invited speakers and members of the public who shared compelling personal stories and presented important program and policy recommendations. We are inspired by your words and work.
