A COURSE IN MIRACLES
CH 14 "BRINGING ILLUSIONS TO TRUTH"
V. THE RECOGNITION OF HOLINESS

In this world you can become a spotless mirror in which the Holiness of your Creator shines forth from you to all around you. You can reflect Heaven here. Yet no reflections of the images of other gods must dim the mirror that would hold God's reflection in it. Earth can reflect Heaven or hell; God or the ego. You need but leave the mirror clean and clear of all the images of hidden darkness you have drawn upon it. God will shine upon it of Himself. Only the clear reflection of Himself can be perceived upon it. Reflections are seen in light. In darkness they are obscure, and their meaning seems to lie only in shifting interpretations rather than in themselves.

WHAT IS IAMBIC PENTAMETER?

<AUDIO>

Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

No-one can give what he has not received.

To give a thing requires first you have

it in your own possession. Here the laws

of Heaven and the world agree. But here

they also separate. The world believes

that to possess a thing it must be kept.

   Salvation teaches otherwise. To give

is how to recognize you have received.

It is the proof that what you have is yours.

You understand that you are healed when you

give healing. You accept forgiveness as

accomplished in yourself as you forgive.

You recognize your brother as yourself,

and thus you will perceive that you are whole.

There is no miracle you cannot give,

for all are given you. Receive them now

by opening the storehouse of your mind

where they are laid, and giving them away.

Christ's vision is a miracle. It comes

from far beyond itself, for it reflects

Eternal Love and the rebirth of love

which never died, but has been kept obscure.

Christ's vision pictures Heaven, for it sees

a world so like to Heaven that what God

created perfect can be mirrored there.

The darkened glass the world presents can show

but twisted images in broken parts.

The real world pictures Heaven's innocence.

Christ's vision is the miracle in which

all miracles are born. It is their source,

remaining with each miracle you give,

and yet remaining yours. It is the bond

by which the giver and receiver are

united in extension here on earth

as they are one in Heaven. Christ beholds

no sin in anyone, and in His sight

the sinless are as one. Their holiness

was given by His Father and Himself.

Christ's vision is the bridge between the worlds,

and on its power can you safely trust

to carry you from this world into one

made holy by forgiveness. Things which seem

quite solid here are merely shadows there,

transparent, faintly seen, at times forgot,

and never able to obscure the light

that shines beyond them. Holiness has been

restored to vision, and the blind can see.

   This is the Holy Spirit's single gift;

the treasurehouse to which you can appeal

   with perfect certainty for everything

that can contribute to your happiness.

All are laid here already. All can be

received but for the asking. Here the door

is never locked, and no-one is denied

his least request or his most urgent need.

There is no sickness not already healed,

no lack unsatisfied, no need unmet

within this golden treasury of Christ.

Here does the world remember what was lost

when it was made. For here it is repaired,

made new again but in a different light.

What was to be the home of sin becomes

the center of redemption and the hearth

of mercy, where the suffering are healed

and welcome. No-one will be turned away

from this new home where his salvation waits.

No-one is stranger to him. No-one asks

for anything of him except the gift

of his acceptance of his welcoming.

Christ's vision is the holy ground in which

the lilies of forgiveness set their roots.

This is their home. They can be brought from here

back to the world, but they can never grow

in its unnourishing and shallow soil.

They need the light and warmth and kindly care

Christ's charity affords. They need the love

with which He looks on them. And they become

His messengers, which give as they received.

Take from His storehouse that its treasures may

increase. His lilies do not leave their home

when they are carried back into the world.

Their roots remain. They do not leave their source,

but carry its beneficence with them,

and turn the world into a garden like

the one they came from, and to which they go

again with added fragrance. Now are they

twice blessed. The messages they brought from Christ

have been delivered and returned to them.

And they return them gladly unto Him.

Behold the store of miracles set out

for you to give. Are you not worth the gift,

when God appointed it be given you?

Judge not God's Son, but follow in the way

He has established. Christ has dreamed the dream

of a forgiven world. It is His gift

whereby a sweet transition can be made

from death to life, from hopelessness to hope.

Let us an instant dream with Him. His dream

awakens us to truth. His vision gives

the means for a return to our unlost

   and everlasting sanctity in God.

LESSON 159
I give the miracles I have received.

Sarah's Commentary:

This follows beautifully on the Lesson yesterday about learning to give as we receive. To give means that I have it before I can give it. Whether it is guilt or love that I am choosing, as I give it, I must receive it because giving and receiving are the same. " To give is how to recognize you have received. It is the proof that what you have is yours." (W.159.1.7-8) When I blame, attack, get angry, judge someone or bring conflict, then I might as well be ordering up from a catalogue the same things for myself because that is what I will be receiving. Giving love, gentleness, kindness, and joy is to know that we have it in us. Whatever I give to anyone, I give to myself. It is important to become very aware of what we are giving. This can be subtle, so we need to stay vigilant and honest about what we are choosing for ourselves.

Every time that we project guilt onto anyone, we are identifying with the ego. The guilt in the mind is always projected. Every time that we attack, we experience the pain of that attack on ourselves. When we take anything from anyone, it is a form of attack. Thus, we have attacked ourselves. In the world, giving and receiving are not the same. What I have taken, you don't have. This reflects the Fourth Law of Chaos (T.23.II.9.1)(ACIM OE T.23.III.27) that says we think we have what we have taken. In other words, this law reflects the belief that we can take from someone and now we have something that they don't have. It is based on our belief that we have taken our identity by separating from God and now we have it and He does not. This was the original attack on ourselves that we relive every time we take anything from anyone, believing that now we have it and they don't.

The world is all about getting and taking. It keeps reinforcing the idea of separation. We all start with the choice in our own minds for the ego or the Holy Spirit. This is the choice we make in each moment, and on the basis of that choice we either give or take. Taking is based on feeling a sense of lack and needing something from someone in order to enhance the ego. Giving is based on knowing that we have everything and are everything, so there is nothing that we need from anyone. Thus, we can extend the love that we know is in us, but not of us.

There is a storehouse in our minds, which is always available to us. It is the storehouse of miracles reflected by the Holy Spirit, Who is always available to us. We access this storehouse every time that we make space in our minds for the miracles to shine forth. All that is required is the recognition that our perspective on everything is wrong. When we go to the Holy Spirit for His interpretation, He reminds us that our brother is our Self. We share the same need to wake up from this dream. We are not separate from each other. Recognizing our sameness as one Self is to reflect the oneness of Heaven and thus experience our own divinity. " Forgiveness is the key to happiness." (W.121) We can only know the love that is in us through our expression of that love and its reflection back on us. That love is ever present in our minds. It is only through forgiveness that we can recognize its presence.

I recall some years ago, when I was in the midst of reading in the Manual for Teachers about the nature of time, space and the script, I got a call from the hospital. My mother, who was 96 at the time, had a serious accident and was very cut up and bruised. I walked into the hospital and found her frail body looking completely beat up with bruises and cuts everywhere. Then the doctor came in and started the procedure of stitching her up. As I sat watching, my mind was full of judgment. The doctor was an intern and was not adept at what he was doing, in my opinion. But then I became aware of my attack thoughts and their impact on me. I realized that they would not contribute to my peace of mind in this situation. By holding these thoughts I would not only be hurting myself, but not contributing in any positive way to this situation.

I asked for Jesus to help me by acknowledging that there must be another way to see this brother who seemed not to know what he was doing. I acknowledged that I must be wrong in the way I was seeing the situation and I wanted help to choose peace for everyone in that room. It then came to me that everything was in my script perfectly for my forgiveness. We were all joined in this small operating room only for one purpose, which was for me to learn to let go of my judgments. The scene that was unfolding in front of me was one that I realized was already over. It was only here again, as I was given one more opportunity to experience the miracle, that everything shifted. All went well. The intern relaxed and gently attended to my mother and thanked me for my presence.

" Temptation has one lesson it would teach, in all its forms, wherever it occurs. It would persuade the holy Son of God he is a body, born in what must die, unable to escape its frailty, and bound by what it orders him to feel." (T.31.VIII.1.1-2)(ACIM OE T.31.VIII.83) It was a situation where I had an opportunity to choose again. There were only two choices I could make. I could either stay with my judgments and attack thoughts, which was the temptation in front of me, or to do as Jesus urges on behalf of our own happiness, which is to choose the Holy Spirit's interpretation, recognizing that mine was always wrong. " Trials are but lessons that you failed to learn presented once again, so where you made a faulty choice before you now can make a better one, and thus escape all pain that what you chose before has brought you. In every difficulty, all distress, and each perplexity Christ calls to you and gently says, 'My brother, choose again'." (T.31.VIII.3.1-2) (ACIM OE T.31.VIII.87)

We can make the decision to turn away from judgments and give our minds over to the Holy Spirit, if we truly want to take our place as the saviors of the world. Why would we want this same Lesson to keep coming up in our script? Right in front of us is another opportunity to make another choice and thus we can, instead, be in a position to receive a miracle. The time in the hospital then became a holy encounter, and my gratitude for all beings overwhelmed me with the beauty of this choice. Until the choice is made in every opportunity in front of us, we simply continue down the same road that we have traveled for eons. It is a weary road and we have become tired and worn by the seeming trials of this world. The ego set it up that way so that we would keep focusing on the problems of the world rather than our own minds, which is the source of all that we receive.

The ego urges us to get for ourselves at someone's expense, to compete with others and win, to attack, to project guilt, not allowing us to see that this is how we keep it, and to stay separate by seeing differences. When we follow its dictates, we cannot experience this treasure house that is in our minds, which contains the gifts of peace, joy, love, innocence and magnificence. It is forgiveness that opens the door to true perception, where these gifts lie dormant until, through giving them, we see that we already have them. "T o give is how to recognize you have received. It is the proof that what you have is yours." (W.159.1.7-8)

Jesus says that our worldly treasure house is nothing that has any value. The only value is in the eternal gifts that we are endowed with from our Creator. " Count, then, the silver miracles and golden dreams of happiness as all the treasures you would keep within the storehouse of the world. The door is open, not to thieves but to your starving brothers, who mistook for gold the shining of a pebble, and who stored a heap of snow that shone like silver. They have nothing left behind the open door. What is the world except a little gap perceived to tear eternity apart, and break it into days and months and years? And what are you who live within the world except a picture of the Son of God in broken pieces, each concealed within a separate and uncertain bit of clay?(T.28.III.7.1-5)(ACIM OE T.28.IV.34)

Isn't this a poignant and sad reflection on what we value in the world---shiny things above unity with one another? We store these gleaming pebbles, which are given value, as if they were gold or a heap of snow mistaken for silver. When we look inside, after a lifetime of accumulating these "treasures", hoping for happiness at what we find, we find  there is nothing of value there. There is nothing that is real. Oh yes, it may still be silver and gold, but it does not fulfill our deep desire for peace and happiness. That is why he says that we have no idea of what was lost when the world was made and we seemed to separate from our real happiness. The special relationships that we pursue are there only to serve our own needs of power, prestige, and ego gratification, and all amount to nothing. They seem to reinforce our specialness, but this is just a shabby substitute for our true reality as divine, eternal beings of light and love. We will never be deeply happy until we do the work of healing our minds by bringing all of our self-serving dark thoughts of attack and revenge, specialness and self-aggrandizement to the healing light of the Atonement.

Yet Jesus says that the storehouse in our minds is full of real treasures that increase as we give them away. We already have everything in our storehouse that contributes to our happiness and can all be received when asked for. The door is not locked. When we appeal to it " for all things that can contribute to your happiness," (W.159.6.1) we can be certain that everything is " laid here already." (W.159.6.2) We only need to make the request and nothing will be denied us that brings true joy to our minds. No need is left unmet when we access this storehouse. When we open it up, by our decision to make this choice, we find a new world where the home of sin (this world) " becomes the center of redemption and the hearth of mercy." (W.159.7.3) In other words, the world becomes a place where we can learn forgiveness and accept the miracle. Now our focus shifts from judgments and grievances to the peace and joy that is within, but these can only be accessed through forgiveness. Now we extend the love of Christ to those who suffer and all are made welcome. Love is our very being and it radiates to all. This is where salvation waits, in the place in our minds where the treasures are, and all that is asked of us is to accept the gifts. Pretty amazing thought! The Holy Spirit is holding open this door to the storehouse in our minds, where miracles simply wait for our acceptance. All we have to do is be willing.  Sometimes, in our insanity, we resist and refuse these gifts by holding onto our judgments and grievances. Even then, Jesus asks us not to judge ourselves for this by recognizing that other opportunities will come along where we can make another choice.

Think about a problem you are currently experiencing or a relationship that seems to be in a power struggle regarding whose needs are going to get met. Recognize that the Holy Spirit is there, waiting to offer a miracle, when you let your way go and open up to asking for His help. He is there ready and willing, waiting for each of us to bring our dark thoughts to the light of truth, so that the miracle can show up. So often we resist by holding onto our perspective of the problem, blaming our brother or demanding of him to sacrifice for our benefit, instead of looking within. If there is not peace in the relationship, then we have chosen wrongly.

It is in our right minds that our nourishment is found, where the ground is fertile and the " lilies of forgiveness set their roots." (W.159.8.1) It is here we experience Christ's vision that we can then bring back to the world. What a beautiful image when contrasted with the lack of nourishment and shallow soil of this world, where the lilies cannot grow. And while we extend Christ's vision and offer our brothers these lilies of forgiveness, we still retain the roots in the fertile soil of our treasure house. The messages that are brought to the world through Christ's vision doubly bless as we receive the blessing that we give. " I give the miracles I have received." (W.159) The treasures in our storehouse are, in fact, not lessened in giving, but indeed they are multiplied. At this feast of plenty, " the more that anyone receives,  the more is left for all the rest to share." (T.28.III.9.2)(ACIM OE T.28.IV.36) Giving miracles just multiplies them for everyone in ways we can't even conceive of. It is our mission here. That is why we are here and what makes this journey so amazing. Life becomes rich with opportunities to forgive and thus we experience more and more miracles in our lives. We need to keep doing the work to clear away the ego gunk so that we can keep connecting with this treasure house in our minds.

To see lack of any kind in our brothers and sisters is to see them as separate. We have a fear of joining that Jesus recognizes. " Be not afraid, my child, but let your world be gently lit by miracles. And where the little gap was seen to stand between you and your brother, join him there. And so sickness will now be seen without a cause. The dream of healing in forgiveness lies, and gently shows you that you never sinned. The miracle would leave no proof of guilt to bring you witness to what never was. And in your storehouse it will make a place of welcome for your Father and your Self. The door is open, that all those may come who would no longer starve, and would enjoy the feast of plenty set before them there. And they will meet with your invited Guests the miracle has asked to come to you." (T.28.III.8.1-8)(ACIM OE T.28.IV.35)

The miracles are waiting for us to access them. The answers are all there for us in every situation and all the time. We just need to be able to listen, and in listening we open up a vast storehouse of gifts waiting for us in our minds. Our starving brothers and sisters are waiting for us to receive them so we can invite them to join in this feast. What are we waiting for? What can be more important than this? We have spent years standing apart from our brothers, sometimes with grievances that seem so irreconcilable to our wrong-minded thinking.  It is time to dispense with this gap in our relationships. The ego will not want to do it, justifying its position, but Jesus asks that, on behalf of our happiness, we recognize that our judgments are always wrong. He reminds us that in our brother we can see ourselves as the Christ, and we are worthy of this gift because " God appointed it be given you." (W.159.10.2) As we accept it, "a sweet transition can be made from death to life; from hopelessness to hope." (W.159.10.5)

Yes, it takes work and daily practice with the Lessons. The words are just nice sounding thoughts until we put them into practice. It means taking the quiet time daily. It means, with every temptation to get upset, to stop and ask to see it differently, knowing that when we listen to the ego, we will always be wrong. It means letting go of our stubborn insistence that we know what everything means and that our perceptions are correct. It means not justifying our position, and taking the responsibility that  " everything that seems to happen to me I ask for, and receive as I have asked." (T.21.II.2.5) (ACIM OE T.21.III.15) We are not victims of any circumstance.

Today, whatever shows up in your life, watch your thoughts on how you are perceiving others in this situation because it will help you to see what you have chosen to align with, Heaven or hell, ego or Holy Spirit. The world offers us opportunities every day to see in its reflection what we have chosen for ourselves, because otherwise we are unable to see our own secret sins and hidden hates. " Now are they twice blessed. The messages they brought from Christ have been delivered, and returned to them. And they return them gladly unto Him." (W.159.9.5-7)

Chapter Fourteen

V. The Recognition of Holiness

38 The Atonement does not make holy. You were created holy. It merely brings unholiness to holiness, or what you made to what you are. The bringing together of truth and illusion, of the ego to God, is the Holy Spirit's only function. Keep not your making from your Father, for hiding it has cost you knowledge of Him and of yourselves. The knowledge is safe, but wherein is your safety apart from it? The making of time to take the place of timelessness lay in the decision to be not as you were. Thus, truth was made past, and the present was dedicated to illusion. And the past, too, was changed and interposed between what always was and now. The past which you remember never was and represents only the denial of what always was.

39 Bringing the ego to God is but to bring error to truth, where it stands corrected because it is the opposite of what it meets and is undone, because the contradiction can no longer stand. How long can contradiction stand when its impossible nature is clearly revealed? What disappears in light is not attacked. It merely vanishes because it is not true. Different realities are meaningless, for reality must be one. It cannot change with time or mood or chance. Its changelessness is what makes it real. This cannot be undone. Undoing is for unreality. And this reality will do for you.

40 Merely by being what it is does truth release you from everything that it is not. The Atonement is so gentle you need but whisper to it, and all its power will rush to your assistance and support. You are not frail with God beside you. Yet without Him you are nothing. The Atonement offers you God. The gift which you refused is held by Him in you. His Spirit holds it there for you. God has not left His altar, though His worshiper placed other gods upon it. The temple still is holy, for the Presence that dwells within it is Holiness.

41 In the temple Holiness waits quietly for the return of them that love it. The Presence knows they will return to purity and to grace. The graciousness of God will take them gently in and cover all their sense of pain and loss with the immortal assurance of their Father's Love. There, fear of death will be replaced with joy of living. For God is Life, and they abide in Life.  [Life is as holy as the Holiness by which it was created.] The Presence of Holiness lives in everything that lives, for Holiness created life and leaves not what It created holy as Itself.

42 In this world you can become a spotless mirror in which the Holiness of your Creator shines forth from you to all around you.

43 The reflection of God needs no interpretation. It is clear. Clean but the mirror, and the message which shines forth from what the mirror holds out for everyone to see no one can fail to understand. It is the message that the Holy Spirit is holding to the mirror that is in him. He recognizes it because he has been taught his need for it but knows not where to look to find it. Let him, then, see it in you and share it with you.

44 Could you but realize for a single instant the power of healing that the reflection of God, shining in you, can bring to all the world, you could not wait to make the mirror of your mind clean to receive the image of the holiness that heals the world. The image of holiness which shines in your mind is not obscure and will not change. Its meaning to those who look upon it is not obscure, for everyone perceives it as the same. All bring their different problems to its healing light, but all their problems are met only with healing there.

45 The response of holiness to any form of error is always the same. There is no contradiction in what holiness calls forth. Its one response is healing, without regard for what is brought to it. Those who have learned to offer only healing because of the reflection of holiness in them are ready at last for Heaven. There, holiness is not a reflection but rather the actual condition of what was but reflected to them here. God is no image, and His creations, as part of Him, hold Him in them in truth. They do not merely reflect truth, for they are truth.

If you would like to support any of the activities of the Society in any way, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Because of the international character of CIMS, the internet is our primary means of communicating and collaborating.

CIMS is a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and donations are tax deductible.

ALSO, by means of your will or other estate plan, you can name "Course in Miracles Society" as the beneficiary of a portion of your estate, or of particular assets in your estate.

In this way, you are honoring your loved ones while also providing critical support to the extension of LOVE.

Namaste and Thank You!
