In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Presidio Neighborhood included Chinese and Japanese communities. Come celebrate our culturally rich past at the Asian American Neighborhood Festival hosted by SBTHP. Performances and demonstrations include Chinese Lion Dancers, Tai Chi, Shakuhachi (flute), Japanese folk dance, local musician Jason Paras, Taiko drummers, Hula dancing, and a dance performance by Sino West. The festival will culminate with a performance by featured musician, Florante Aguilar.

Carrie Jacobs-Bond was the first woman composer to sell one million copies of a hit song. Please join us at Heritage Square when Carrie visits Harriet Puntenney, our local music teacher who lived in one of the houses that was later moved to Heritage Square. Harriet and Carrie have a conversation about music from the 1890s to the Broadway musicals of the 30s and 40s, sharing memorabilia, juicy anecdotes, humor and songs by composers such as Scott Joplin, George M. Cohan, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Live music will be performed and the audience is invited to sing along - a rip roaring time for only a $5 donation!

NEW! Crank Up the Music

If you haven't seen the "Crank up the Music" exhibit of early music machines at the Stagecoach Inn Museum, please come for a visit. There are more than 30 machines, with the earliest ones having large spectacular amplifying horns, and the later ones having extraordinary cabinetry. The exhibit also includes fanciful advertising posters and needle boxes. This exhibit
includes: Victor-R machine (1902), the "Nipper", a glass horn, two oak horns, and much more. There are even are two phonographs in the exhibit that you can listen to and compare with today's recordings. 

NEW! Frank Lloyd Wright's Legacy In San Diego: The Taliesin Apprentices

In the decades following World War II, those who studied under architect Frank Lloyd Wright in Spring Green, Wisconsin and Scottsdale, Arizona through his Taliesin apprentice program designed and built a fabulous array of structures in La Jolla and San Diego. Several of them, including Vincent Bonini, Frederick Liebhardt, Loch Crane, Sim Bruce Richards and Bill Slatton, established their professional practices in San Diego. The exhibition will display, for the first time in San Diego, Frank Lloyd Wright's unbuilt designs for the region, as well as the work of his two sons Lloyd and John.

Local photographers Robert Watt and Dennis Schuett are featured in this photography exhibit that captures two different perspectives of one subject, the Santa Barbara Channel. Both photographers grew up in rural, landlocked, middle America and were drawn to the allure of the ocean. In this experimental exhibit, they show how photography can capture one subject in unique and diverse ways.

Explore the career of Edward Marple, arguably one of the most talented ship model makers in the world. As a hobby chosen to pass the time made available due to illness and to use the skills he acquired as a dental technician, Marple immersed himself in the craft of model making. This exhibit explores the legacy of a man who began as a hobbyist and ended up creating some of the most stunning ship models ever crafted.  Opening reception, Sat., November 7 from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.  Free and open to the public.
