This award honors teachers who are making a difference in the lives of students across Iowa by providing excellent curriculum, encouraging lifelong learning, and inspiring a passion for STEM subjects.

Formerly known as The STEM Education Award for Inspired Teaching, this award will honor one teacher from each of the six STEM regions. Each winner will receive $1,500 in addition to another $1,500 to be used in their classroom. The deadline for submissions is December 11, and the winners will be announced in April 2016.

Business Engagement Highlight: Monsanto

Monsanto is a sustainable agriculture company with locations around the world, including a plant in Muscatine, Iowa. Employing close to 430 people, with plans to hire 50 more in the upcoming year, they are a significant partner in Iowa's economy and the implementation of STEM in areas of education, workforce, and business partnerships.

Deeply invested in the Governor's STEM Council and partners with the SE Region STEM Hub (UI/KCC), Monsanto hosted two teacher externs this summer and, according to plant manager Shawn Schrader, will be eager to host again next summer.  Externs Nick Scheetz (Washington High School) and Bret Woodward (Muscatine High School East Campus) invested 6  weeks of their summer to learn the processes at Monsanto, working specifically in the physical properties lab. Both teachers excelled on their testing projects and have plans to incorporate what they have learned into their curriculum while also letting students know the available career opportunities available right here in Iowa.

A special thank you goes to Shawn Schrader and Chris Blair for their work as training hosts and to our teachers for working to improve the importance of STEM in any direction our students may take!
