WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO
2015 National Kidney Month
NKF-MD kicked off this year's National Kidney Month with a successful Kidney Health Risk Assessment at the 2015 B'More Healthy Expo. We served between 400-500 people at our booth, with 120 completing the assessment. NKF volunteers even appeared on a FOX 45 television News at 10 interview!
World Kidney Day
During the first week of March, we visited 190 state delegates and senators in Annapolis to raise awareness about kidney disease, and a World Kidney Day KEY screening was held at the state Treasury Building on March 12th. NKF-MD emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment through media interviews on several local TV stations, at numerous "Your Kidneys & You" presentations and before the Baltimore City Council.
Beyond Dialysis
Also during National Kidney Month, our successful Beyond Dialysis series was concluded for the year with two patient education conferences held at Dove Pointe in Salisbury and the Holiday Inn Frederick. Check out videos from our Salisbury conference on our YouTube page!
Screenings
The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland continues its mission of early detection and early intervention through free KHRA (Kidney Health Risk Assessments) and KEY (Kidneys: Evaluate Yours) health screenings. KEY screenings, held throughout our service area, identify early markers for high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease. So far in 2015 we've held 2 KHRAs and 5 KEY screenings in 2 states, and have screened over 460 people. Click here for a calendar of upcoming 2015 KEY screenings.
Kidney Walks
April 19- Greater Baltimore Kidney Walk
Over 5,500 walkers gathered at Camden Yards to raise $350,000+ to support kidney patients, research, and awareness of kidney disease and that number keeps on climbing. Walkers were entertained with music, kids games and crafts, zumba, and much more!
April 26- Southern Delaware Kidney Walk
Thanks to more than 40 teams and over 500 participants, the Southern DE Kidney Walk raised over $50,000 to help fight kidney disease. It was a gorgeous day for a walk around Cape Henlopen State Park and walkers enjoyed a scenic view at the beach while making a difference in the lives of others.
May 3- Salisbury Kidney Walk
Over 400 participants walked the three mile route at Winterplace Park in Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore and raised over $30,000 to help fight kidney disease.
Scientific Session
Attended by over 45 medical professionals, Scientific Session held on May 7 featured renowned speaker Dr. Christopher Wilcox, George E. Schreiner Professor of Nephrology and Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Georgetown University. Participants enjoyed dinner and browsed posters highlighting the research findings of our 2014 NKF-MD grant awardees. Dr. Michael Gorin from Johns Hopkins University and Dr. Van Anthony Villar from University of Maryland received awards for the top poster presentations. We were also pleased to welcome Kevin Longino, Interim CEO and National Board Member.
