Notes from Sunday's Sermon
"ASTONISHING AND AMAZING FAITH" (Matthew 8:5-10):
Watch the text! A centurion who worked for Caesar came to Jesus and said, "My servant is sick." This man with credentials and connections came to a Jewish carpenter who was from a ghetto in Nazareth and said, "I need some help! My servant is sick." He came interceding on behalf of his servant. We don't know what this servant did to deserve the honor and attention from his master. And Jesus said, "I'll come and heal him."
The soldier said, "No, Jesus. I know enough about you, and I don't think it would be appropriate for you to come in my house. I've got magazines that you wouldn't like. I've got things in my closet I don't want you to see. I've got things on my cable TV that might offend you. Nah, Jesus, you can't come in my house. I'm not worthy for you to come inside my house. And so Jesus, if you would just speak a word right here, my servant back home will be healed."
And Matthew says that when Jesus heard these words, he was astonished and said, "I've never seen faith like this before." Jesus was astonished and amazed by this man's faith! And, ever since I've heard how Jesus reacted to and described this soldier, my prayer has been-"Lord, I want astonishing and amazing faith that God himself will say, "I've never seen faith like that before."
Several things made this faith astonishing and amazing. First of all, it's astonishing that a Roman soldier believed that Jesus could help. It's amazing that he sense enough to know only Jesus could help. Note: This Roman soldier knew Caesar, but Caesar couldn't help him with this problem. This soldier was decorated in the military, but his armor and his badges and his achievements could not help him cure the sickness that was tormenting his servant. You see, some things Caesar can do, but there are some things only God can do! And my brothers and sisters even in some churches we seem to have forgotten that it is Jesus-the power of Jesus and the blood of Jesus and the presence of Jesus-that makes the difference.
Sincerely in Christ,
Pastor Stephen King

Youth: Mentor A High School Student Who Needs Help To Graduate
The Oakland Unified School District and the Oakland Mayor's Office in cooperation with Oakland Serves are developing a new mentoring program for 2015-16. Students at risk of dropping out will receive five hours per week of paid employment as well as training in job skills linked to three hours per week of one-on-one mentoring help with their school work.
Over 500 students drop out of high school in Oakland every year. Many have been leading difficult lives and see no hope of graduating and pursuing careers of interest and value. A pilot program for 20 students at risk of dropping out is planned for the academic year 2015-16. This exciting program aims to turn the world around for students who are on the edge of giving up, and for Oakland. Please go to Oakland Serves' web site to find out more about the program.
www.oaklandserves.org
Oakland Serves is a group of professionals from academia, business, and government. The web site includes a link to a form you may fill out and send to us to express your interest in finding out more about this initiative as the planning evolves. Please note that while ability to mentor math and science is a plus, competence in other subjects is also very welcome. English fluency is required. We will respond to you promptly, answering any questions, and keep you informed as we proceed. Mentor training (one day) will take place in October; mentors will begin work in November.

A Mission-Driven Church
Our Mission...
The Memorial Tabernacle Church has come together by the Holy Spirit for the specific purpose of preaching and teaching the word of God, (the Bible), and about Jesus Christ, God's son, and to proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom of God to the North Oakland Community and its environs; to bring healing to the brokenhearted and deliverance to the oppressed.
Our Foundation...
"And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more, as you see the day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25)
"Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God."
(Philippians 4:6)
" Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious care and godly fear and awe."
(Hebrews 12: 28)
