President's Message

Sharon Mitchell

Spring is here!!  Everywhere you look, you see the first signs of plants sprouting, sending up shoots and bursting into bud.  This is also the time of year when we see the first signs of IMPACT 100's most recent grants bursting into bloom.

The children of MYCincinnati performed on stage at Music Hall on March 8th under the direction of John Morris Russell.  The music was wonderful, the smiles were huge, and there were not many dry eyes in the audience.  (You can see a brief clip on You Tube). Amazing, beautiful music!!

The Community Matters Washing Well project to install a Laundromat in Lower Price Hill is well underway.  Site tours of the Community Center are in progress, and the residents will soon be able to take advantage of this wonderful new resource.

The Literacy Network has recruited and started several new Literacy classes.  If you were a "fly on the wall", you would already see the pride in the adult students' faces as they begin the process of reading for the first time.  Consonants and vowels are being sorted out - and the smiles are spreading.

You can see the power of our collective giving in action as we

Spread the Joy . . . and Spread the Impact.

As we celebrate major milestones with last year's grant recipients, we continue the cycle of grant reviews to identify the 2015 Grant Award recipients.  Starting in April, the Grant Review Committees will be hard at work reviewing grant applications from the agencies invited to submit grants.  There are many amazing, strong grant proposals that have the potential to make a lasting impact on the community.  This year promises to be another year of strong candidates, stimulating site visits, and difficult choices as we work to identify the agencies that will be Finalists - and then select FOUR Grant Recipients.

Finally, I hope that many of you are interested in actively spreading the word about Impact 100, and willing to help us recruit more members for next year.  We all would love to be able to give five grants in 2016 - but that will only happen if we all pitch in.  Here's how you can help.

  • Impact 100 is increasing its presence on social media - so please join the conversation on Facebook. Be sure to share, like and comment on Impact 100 regularly!
  • Most importantly, please introduce your friends, colleagues, and relatives to Impact 100 ... and bring a friend to an Impact 100 event. There's nothing more powerful than a personal invitation from a trusted friend!  For prospects, there is nothing more powerful than seeing Impact 100 in action.

I hope you all enjoy the start of spring, the exciting Final Four Basketball games and the start of the Cincinnati Red's Baseball Season!   I look forward to seeing you at a future Impact 100 event.

Warm Regards,

Sharon Mitchell

President, Impact 100

Impact 100 Board Nominations

Spring is here and Impact 100 is kicking into high gear.  Grant review and CIRC members are preparing for grant application reviews and site visits.  Recruiting and Membership are engaging current and future members.  Communications and Marketing are keeping members and greater Cincinnati informed.  The Nominating Committee is planning for next year.

The Nominating Committee has begun assessing the needs and capacity of the current Board.  Beginning in June, the committee will meet with Impact 100 members who are interested in serving on the Board. The goal is to present the 2016 slate for approval in September.

As a volunteer organization, Impact 100 relies on members' generous donations.  Members' gracious donation of time and talent is vital.  Involvement on the Board is a rewarding, creative and collaborative experience.  As Impact 100 continues to grow and Strive for Five, there are numerous opportunities for personal and organizational growth.  Joining the Board is one way to expand your Impact 100 experience.

Please consider nominating yourself or another member for Board service.  Please contact Annemarie Henkel, Nominating Chair, at [email protected] for more information or with any questions.

Impact EDU: A Snapshot of the TriState
THANK YOU - to everyone who came out for our recent event -
Impact EDU: A Snapshot of the TriState

We were able to hear from regional leaders from each of our Impact 100 five focus areas, and learn about issues that are affecting our TriState currently. We learned how our region compares to others and what we are doing to address those needs from a global perspective. We'd especially like to thank the experts, who joined us from each of the following groups:

  • ArtsWave representing the Culture Focus Area
  • Literacy Network representing the Education Focus Area
  • Rumpke representing the Environment Focus Area

Member Spotlight

Susan Otto
Impact 100 Member

Who I am?

Susan Gamel Otto is newly retired, but don't tell her that...she claims she's an adventurer...at least that is what her new business cards proclaim.  Though Susan's business materials can still be found on www.Training-Modules.com and www.Self-StudyCourse.com, she's spending a great deal of her time gallivanting around the world.  Last year, she and her husband, Ron, climbed the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, boated down the Amazon River, and sailed and snorkeled around the Galapagos Islands.  Later, they took time to attend out-of-town weddings for 5 out of her 34 nieces and nephews.  In between all their adventures, she dabbles in various art projects and works out to work off all the bad food she loves to eat.

What got you involved in Impact 100?

It all started when Lisa Kaminski invited Susan to attend a 2006 Impact party at Luann Scherer's house, where she immediately joined.  One of the things Susan loves most about Impact 100 is the fact that the organization allows her to get involved as little or as much as she wants...which means that she can attend the meetings, make phone calls or send emails to get past and new members to join, host a party to get new members, serve on various committees, and/or attend the dinner where each of the selected nonprofits from each area shares their story.  Some of you may even remember that Susan's business sponsored a 2009 Impact event at the Ascent in Covington.

What keeps you a member?

Susan loved and still loves how she can write a check...and that's it!  And, though Susan may only write a check, she knows that competent, professional, intelligent women do the research and narrow down the best selections.  And when it all is said and done, she gets to vote (or even not to vote) for the nonprofits that she feel will benefit the community from her point of view.  She loves how there is plenty for everyone...and for Susan...she'll write a check and say, "Ah, I've done a good thing."
