Weight Loss Surgery Center
Weight Loss Surgery Center
The Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Milford Regional provides an effective solution for adults that struggle with severe weight problems along with their associated health risks and medical complications. Generally, weight loss surgery (known as bariatric surgery) is a possible option for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40, or 35 if there are accompanying weight-related illnesses such as diabetes, sleep apnea, or arthritis. Find out your BMI by using our BMI calculator.

Milford Regional's weight loss surgery program called FreshStart is not just about surgery; it's about a whole new approach to living your life. Our team of professionals, which include surgeons, nurse practitioners, dietitians, behavioral health counselors and physical therapists, is committed to walking with you through your weight loss journey. And our partnership with UMass Memorial Medical Center, a leader in bariatric surgery, ensures the highest standards of quality and care.

The Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Milford Regional is a fully accreditated bariatric surgery program. The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) combined their respective national bariatric surgery accreditation programs into a single unified program to achieve one national accreditation standard for bariatric surgery centers, the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

The first step of the FreshStart Program is to attend an information session. You will learn about the different types of surgeries and have all your questions and concerns addressed. Register here for the next session.

Patient Stories: A New Life; Weight Loss Surgery-Vertical Sleeve
David Eckbold knew that shedding pounds would make him healthier but he tried various weight loss programs with little success. David has two young daughters and recently married his wife Robin. "Living with Robin and her positive attitude got me thinking long term about what I was going to be like in 15 years and 20 years. I knew I wanted to be at the girls' weddings and be around for grandchildren. The question was, in what condition would I be in?" David's family was his incentive to undergo weight loss surgery. Since his surgery he no longer needs his blood pressure or diabetes medicine. Read David's story.
Good Things You Should Know
Lung Cancer Screening is Now Covered by Most Insurances
Lung Cancer Screening is Now Covered by Most Insurances

Lung cancer is a very serious disease and often will not exhibit symptoms until the disease has progressed. Recognizing this fact, Milford Regional is offering a screening test for lung cancer to detect the disease early when it is most treatable. Early detection can dramatically affect the outcome of the disease which is why patients are encouraged to speak to their primary care physician about this test.

If you fit the criteria, you may be given a referral by your physician for this lung cancer screening test. Whether or not you should have the CT screening test will depend on your smoking history, along with your age, medical history and family history.

Most insurances now cover the cost of this test. Please check with your insurance company prior to your appointment to see if the test is covered. Learn more about the lung cancer screening.

Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award
Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award
Milford Regional received Get With the Guidelines?-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The award recognizes the hospital's commitment to providing stroke patients with nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. In addition, Milford Regional has also met specific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center, meaning the hospital has a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients.

Milford Regional had to achieve an 85 percent or higher adherence to the Get With the Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and had to achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With the Guidelines-Stroke quality measures in order to achieve such a high award.

The quality measures are designed to help hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. They focus on appropriate use of guideline-based care for stroke patients, including aggressive use of medications such as clot-busting and anti-clotting drugs, blood thinners and cholesterol-reducing drugs, preventive action for deep vein thrombosis and smoke cessation counseling.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number five cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
