Inaugurated in 1964, the Rolex Big Boat Series celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. The Regatta, hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club and sailed on San Francisco Bay, Sep. 17-20, drew top sailors and boats from across the nation and abroad for four days of extremely competitive one-design and handicap racing. Rolex became the title sponsor of the event in 2005. Photo by Ed Jay. |

Sturgeon General's Report
by Andy Dolich
|
To celebrate the kickoff of the NFL season, I decided to head to British Columbia last weekend and go fishing. I was lucky enough to live in Vancouver in 1999 and 2000, when I worked for the Vancouver Grizzlies before the team relocated to Memphis.
Dave Doroghy, one of my colleagues at the Grizzlies, knew I was interested in fishing, and through him I became better acquainted with all of the incredible outdoor activities in British Columbia. He introduced me to Rick Hansen, the CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, who's a passionate advocate for people with disabilities in Canada and around the world.
|
The Day the Fish got Bigger and Bigger.
|
|
Rick is a celebrated Paralympic athlete best known as the Man in Motion for his epic two-year wheelchair trip around the world to prove the potential of people with disabilities. When Rick was 15, a car accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Rick is a force of nature on many fronts, and his passion for fishing conservation is legendary. That love
led him to create the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society in 1997, when the species was in major distress. A mandatory catch-and-release program was created, and the fishery is now one of the most vibrant in North America. Rick invited me out on the Fraser River in search of white sturgeon on his customized boat on Nov. 7, 2000, and I was hooked.
|
I call that experience
The Day the Fish got Bigger and Bigger.
The white sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in North America and the third-largest species of sturgeon, behind the caviar-bearing beluga and kaluga. White sturgeon are found in four major areas on the west coast of North America, including the Sacramento River, which empties into
San Pablo Bay, the Columbia River system in British Columbia and Washington, the Snake River in Oregon and the Fraser River system.
After several years of fishing with my son Cory, he wasn't available, so I asked my nephew Scott and his 11-year-old son, Mack, from Portland to join me. We met Jordi, our guide, on a Sunday morning and headed out on the Fraser River, which is about a two-hour drive from downtown Vancouver. The morning action was OK. As the Raiders were kicking off in Oakland, I had a bite that had serious heft by the way it stripped line off the reel before it turned toward our boat. When it jumped right next to the boat that fish turned out to be the biggest I had seen. Our guide estimated it at 8 feet and 275 pounds.
Unfortunately, after a fight of more than an hour, it wrapped around a snag and was gone. I know you are saying fish story, but check out the photos and video.
|
The author hooks a determined foe and starts a battle lasting over one hour.
|
|
The guide estimated the sturgeon at 8 feet and weighing 275 pounds.
|
|
|
All fish are released back into the water.
|
|
Upside of sturgeon fishing
* You aren't out in an ocean that can turn you green.
* British Columbia and other locations are spectacularly beautiful, with
wildlife everywhere.
* The tackle is relatively light.
* The bite of a 5-pound fish can be the same as a 500-pound monster.
* All fish are released at many locations.
* The species is 100 million years old.
* A big fish can be 100 years old.
* There are giants swimming down below. (See photo below.)
* Every fish is tagged and scanned for scientific research and long-term
protection of the species.

The Fraser River has produced the largest sturgeon in North America. In 2012 a monster white sturgeon weighing an estimated 1,100 pounds and measuring 12-feet, 4-inches was caught and released. (See photo below.)
Catches of white sturgeon averaging 30-100 pounds are typical, even an occasional 250-pounder, but this sturgeon was really massive, believed to be the biggest freshwater fish ever caught with rod and reel in North America, and possibly the oldest.
I fish with the BC Sportfishing Group (bcsportfishinggroup.com, 877-796-3345). All of their guides are top-notch. For the past few years I have fished with Jordi Williams, who is a pro's pro and knows the area like he's one of the fish. (Photos courtesy of BC Sportfishing Group.)

Raiders Super Fan --
Carla Conley, Sparkle Raider
They call me Sparkle Raider, a name I was given because of the sparkle in my eyes. My cubicle walls at work are blanketed with pictures of Raiders legends, a reflection of the love I have for the Silver and Black. Between us, my husband and I have five children; not all Raiders fans, but we love them just the same.
My love for football started in elementary school when I lived on the Stanford University campus, where my father was enrolled as a post-graduate student. During the summer months a small group of us children would ride our bikes to the football practice field to watch the team workout. We also went Stanford football games. As a youngster, I was in awe of the Oakland Raiders Soul Patrol. They were bad to the bone.
However, it was Lyle Alzado, the Oakland Raiders defensive end (No. 77), who caught my attention as a young adult and really got me hooked onto Raiders football. I have been going to Raiders games since they returned to Oakland in 1995.
These days I am "all in"; attending games, booster cub meetings and events and joining Raider Nation groups online and in person, for activities. As an event planner for the Raider Nation my focus is on planning and holding events to honor U.S. military veterans. I have established Operation Roundtree, named in honor of the soldier I adopted in 2011. It's a coordinated effort between Raider Nation groups throughout the United States. We hold Raider Nation Salute to Veterans events annually, during the month of February. I also organize donation drives, collecting basic need items for homeless veterans in Oakland.
My family's military history consists of many relatives, including my father and grandfather, who were both Army veterans. My mother retired from the VA Hospital. She was a psychiatric nurse specialist.
Currently I am working on a very interesting project with local Raider Nation musical artists, of various genres, to create a "We Are The World" style-song to honor veterans. A music video will follow.
I am very proud of the work we do with veterans, all in the name of Raider Nation. The veterans deserve our honor and respect. This is a very exciting time for me. I truly love my Raider life.
Carla Conley is among a number of Oakland Raiders Super Fans who add excitement and delight to attending Raiders games. Carla is pictured with Super Fan

Question Man -- How many games will the 49ers win this year? Why?
|
|
Somewhere between 5 and 9 wins. Why? The last name is York and the first name isn't New.
Where is Eddie D when we really need him?

Question Man -- How many games will the Oakland Raiders win this year?
|
|
As many as they can. Because winning is better than losing and because they like to hear the noise of people who like to vent their frustrations with the political system by going to football matches and because Donald Trump likes winners.
Steven Piser, Attorney, Oakland

I expect the Raiders to improve upon last season and their final record will be 7-9.
