"The power of our work is in our partnerships.  Through leveraging the time, talent and treasure of our volunteers and donors we are able to better meet the needs of our low-income families--giving them a chance improve their circumstances and develop their capacities so that they too can share in the wealth of our community," Bita Dayhoff, President-CAC.

"Helping People, Changing Lives"

For close to 50 years, the Community Action Council has served the Howard County community by helping people to help themselves.  Our aim is not to provide a hand-out, but rather a hand-up. Having strong partnerships with all levels of government, community partners, and dedicated volunteers, we, on a daily basis, meet the demanding needs of our clients and are committed to superior human service delivery for all that we serve.

Though the county enjoys and maintains a reputation of being one of the most affluent counties in the nation, for some, that wealth is currently beyond their reach. Our efforts help to eradicate those disparities, as we seek to advocate for the needs of low-income residents. Our goal is to decrease the number of families living in poverty.

We recognize that our employees are the most critical link to helping us achieve our visions. We are currently recruiting for a number of positions, and we encourage you to review these openings and refer qualified applicants to us for opportunities. All of these positions are located in Columbia. Please click HERE to see full listing.

Summer Enrichment Program

Swimming at MarTar Swim School!

The 2015 Head Start Summer Enrichment Program opened with a splash when the first group of children visited the swim school in Elkridge for an hour of indoor-salt-water pool swimming on June 1st!  Every Monday a different group attended allowing all 188 enrolled children participated.

Under the direction of Tara Girch, the program, geared for swimmers and non-swimmers, introduced children to the fun of swimming and water safety.  Highly experienced ISIA certified swim instructors and a certified lifeguard were on duty at all times and Head Start staff was also instructed in swim safety rules.  An on-site staffed play-zone was available for those children who decided not to enter the pool.

The enthusiasm and joy the children expressed as they clutched noodles and floating barbells and were thus able to swim independently (many for the first time) was infectious!   Many parents attended and had their cameras at the ready to take pictures and videos.  Successful Summer Swimming!
