"The human race is challenged more than ever before to demonstrate our mastery - not over nature but of ourselves."   ~ Rachel Louise Carson

Good morning,

Welcome back from April vacation! I hope everyone enjoyed their time away from school and was able to have some fun before our final stretch. I had a great time watching my brother run the Boston Marathon for the first time (setting a personal record) and even more fun spending time with my 6 week old son and 2 ? year old son. Getting some extra sleep was truly needed!

We were excited to see the 8th graders back from Washington, D.C. right before break. From stories being told, it sounds like they had a fantastic time. So much time and energy goes into planning this trip. We would like to thank all of the house leaders and chaperones for making it memorable and meaningful to our students.

Next up for our students and teachers is Wellness Week and the Cape Cod trip! More fun and adventure to look forward to in the upcoming month as April showers bring May flowers.

Warm regards,

George

Health Survey for Parents of
wayland cares

Middle & High School Students

In conjunction with Wayland Public Schools' biannual administration of the Metrowest Adolescent Health Survey to students at Wayland Middle School and Wayland High School, WaylandCares administers a survey to parents. This survey focuses on various health and parenting issues including substance abuse. Data is compared with results of the student survey and is used to inform educational and community programming. Results of both the student and parent survey are anonymous. This survey, found at the link below, can be completed on any type of computer as well as a smart phone.

Your response to this survey is greatly appreciated. WaylandCares receives funding from a federal grant under the Drug-Free Communities Support Program and from the Town of Wayland. Wayland Public Schools serves as the fiscal agent for the grant; WaylandCares operates under the direction of Wayland Youth and Family Services. Wayland Hosts TEDx Event!

May 9, 2:00 - 6:00 PM

WHS Auditorium

Wayland will host its first annual TEDx Event on May 9, from 2-6 p.m. at Wayland High School. The theme of this event is "Daring Greatly" and will showcase Wayland middle and high school-age speakers and performers. The event, started by Wayland resident Ashley Welch, is an opportunity to bring people together, share ideas, create and inspire conversation and understanding. This is a ticketed event and is open to the public. Each talk will be 6-18 minutes and topics range from extraterrestrial life to micro-aggression, from beat boxing to transgender identity in our culture, from introverts in an extrovert's world, to the power of volunteerism.

Over 40 students auditioned for a speaking role and of those students, 13 were chosen to speak and 3 to perform. Those students are: Will Danforth (9th), Naiya Davis (11th), Anne Flaherty (11th), Tachianna Griffiths (12th), Rachel Hawley (12th), Jameson Hunt (12th), Hugh Jones (10th), Sylvia Lagor (7th), Jack McCahan (6th), Lila Masand (11th), Declan Nolan (12th), Daly Place (12th), Nour Sayeh (11th), Gabi Ragazzi (11th), Casey Troost (10th) and the T-Tones, a WHS A Cappella group.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon

May 13 (Corrected Date)

Please Help Us!

We need your help for the WMS Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon to be held on May 13. We are delighted to announce a few changes to the luncheon this year: it will be environmentally sustainable; it will be catered by Whole Foods in Wayland; and it will involve families creating an appreciation video through WeGush. We hope WMS families will contribute in at least one of the following ways:

  1. Make a donation The PTO has generously seeded this project with $400, and our goal is to match their contribution with $400 from the WMS parent community. Suggested donation:  $5-10 via Paypal:   http://waylandpto.org/middle-school-pto/donations-and-purchases/)
  2. Volunteer to set up or clean up (click on http://vols.pt/Jeneyj)
  3. Volunteer to bring in a dessert for the dessert bar (click on http://vols.pt/Jeneyj)
  4. Gush about your teachers and staff on  http://app.wegush.com/8272ebkr

Note:  deadline for donations and volunteer signup is May 2.

We are creating an appreciation video through an on-line company called wegush.com. We encourage every family to participate in this project by clicking on  http://app.wegush.com/8272ebkr -- you'll see that our page contains space for you to write a message of thanks to WMS teachers and staff -- you can be anonymous, or you can list your names.  Of course, we are only seeking positive comments for this particular video!

Thanks in advance to all of you for showing your appreciation for our awesome WMS teachers and staff!

6th & 7th Grade Parents

Student Placement Requests

May 15 Deadline

Considerable thought and effort are given to student scheduling here at WMS. It is a highly complex, intricate, and time-consuming process.  Parents may make specific placement requests under the following circumstances:

  • If you have concerns about a teacher based on an older sibling's experience, you may request a different teacher for your child. You may not, however, request a specific teacher.
  • If your child has had difficulty with a specific student which has negatively impacted your child's ability to learn, you may request that the children be placed in separate clusters.

To be considered, all placement requests must be sent to [email protected] no later Friday, May 15, and must include your child's first and last name, and grade in September. Although we will work hard to honor your request, we cannot make any guarantees.

6th Grade Parent Reminder

Physical Exams Due May 15

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations require a current physical exam with immunizations (dated within the last 12 months), be submitted to the Nurse's office prior to the start of 7th grade. Please send your child's most recent physical exam to me no later than Friday May 15, so that I may have time to enter your child's information into their medical record before the start of 7th grade. If your child has an upcoming appointment for his/her physical after May 15, please forward that documentation to me as soon as you receive it. Thank you!
