This Week at BJBE

June 1, 2015

Dear Friends,

Rabbi Stoller has been in touch with the Jewish community in Houston to see how BJBE can support flood relief efforts. Houston is Rabbi Stoller's hometown, and one of the most affected areas, Meyerland, is where Rabbi  grew up. In order to help families who have been impacted by the flood, BJBE is collecting Target gift cards which members of the Houston clergy will personally distribute to families. BJBE volunteers will be collecting Target gift cards at the Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 3; at the Friday, June 5 Leadership Shabbat; and all week long in the Temple office. Please contact Susie Susie Selbst or Sarah Duffin with questions.

Have a voice in your BJBE Community by attending our Annual Meeting on Wednesday. We will be showing the Blackhawks game so please be part of the quorum needed to vote on the constitutional amendments.  Celebrate the installations of our new president, Gary Schaffel, the 2015/16 Board of Trustees and Sisterhood Board at Friday night's Tefilah Band service.

Please see below for information on these and other upcoming programs.

We look forward to celebrating the B'not Mitzvah of Arielle Lewis and Brianna Lewis at the morning service and the B'nai Mitzvah of Ethan Seiden and Isabelle West at our Havdalah Service this Saturday, and the Bat Mitzvah of Ellie Ginsburg on Sunday. Mazel tov to Arielle, Brianna, Ethan, Isabelle, Ellie and their families.

Experience a prayer service grounded in communal song, thought-provoking liturgy, and deep silence, followed by camaraderie over bagels and coffee. Morning Minyan participants have commented that this worship has connected to their lives in many unexpected and transformative ways. For more information, contact Rabbi Stoller. The weekday prayer melodies are available here, although all are welcome to attend regardless of musical or prayerbook knowledge.

Join us Wednesdays 6:45pm - 7:15pm in the Chapel for Musical Minyan. This is a deeply spiritual way to transition into the evening. Make it part of your weekly worship. SOCIAL ACTION NETWORK

A Message from SHALVA

Did you Know.........SHALVA Collects Cellphones? For quite a few years now, BJBE has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA. We thought you'd enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance. They pay us according to the "blue book" value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $4000-5,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients.

Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts IPods, IPads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.

Please support Sisterhood's social action project to collect needed items for the Ark. We are accepting donations of aluminum foil, quart size Ziploc freezer bags, tissues, deodorant and feminine hygiene products. Look for the bin in the tzedakah nook with the Ark label.

We are not collecting used clothing at this time.  However, we are collecting toiletries, batteries, hearing aids, eyeglasses, ink cartridges, and cell phones in addition to the project for the Ark mentioned above.

June Tzedakah
Help us to help the most vulnerable in the Houston community devastated by the flooding. Over 11 inches of rain fell in some spots of Houston overnight and into the next day -- inundating byways and highways, slowing first responders, knocking out power and generally bringing the southeast Texas metropolis to a standstill. Hardest hit was Meyerland, Bellaire and Willow Meadows where so many in our community have lost everything. It will take days to assess damages and many months to recover and rebuild. The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston is mobilizing a community response to provide aid and support for people devastated by the May 26 flood. We are here to help individuals, families and our Jewish institutions, which sustained substantial damage.
CARING COMMUNITY

Brushstrokes: Discover your creative self and your compassionate self!  Bring your curiosity and your adventurous spirit!  The very action of doing something different invites us to accept and embrace ourselves.  We will learn to paint beautiful leaves and integrate mindfulness.  This promises to be a unique, fun and relaxing experience.

Marla Snyder teaches a class called "Watercolor for Those Who Don't Think They Can" in surrounding communities and is the Studio Art teacher at Chicagoland Jewish High School.  Margot Andersen is a social worker and resilience builder for the challenges of daily living. All art supplies will be provided. Cost is $40.00. Tuesdays, July 21st and 28th 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Please contact Margot Andersen to register.

BJBE's Caring Community is a team of volunteers who can act as your extended family when your family needs additional support.  Caring Community provides the following services: home delivered meals in times of need, transportation to/from temple or a medical appointment, phone support for people who are ill or lonely, senior education and caregiver support, chicken or vegetable soups (always available in the kitchen!) and a virtual food pantry.  To access these services confidentially, please call Gloria Kaiz at 847-945-3741.

BJBE is certified as a Safer Synagogue by Jewish Community Abuse Resources, Education & Solutions (JCARES). Our leadership has been trained in understanding the impact of abuse across the lifespan and improving access to support for congregants experiencing abusive situations. For more information, please contact the clergy at 847-940-7575.
