November 2013

What a way to end our TU calendar year!

Our "Autumn on the River/Fly Fishing Film Tour" fundraiser was a huge success.  Beautiful films featured bonefish, permit, tarpon, golden dorado, atlantic salmon, golden mahseer and others.  The event not only attracted many new faces, but also generated $5000 of net income to help fund our continued conservation and education activities.  Deals abounded on gear and fishing trips and venues.  Please note the list of commercial donors below and thank them with your patronage.  Mack Martin and the Atlanta Fly Fishing School  were particularly generous.  And both Jack Killorin and Rick Kinkade were key volunteers whose efforts contributed to the success of the event.   Next year we will schedule the event so as not to conflict with the Fall Fishing Trip so that more chapter members can attend.

Programs Chairman Ron Cheslock drew a huge following to Brevard, NC for the Fall Fishing Trip over the weekend of Nov. 9/10.  Over 20 Chapter members participated.  Some went up as early as Thursday.  Rick Heneghan and I camped at the Davidson River Campground.  We hosted a "Bourbon and Bonfire" event Friday night that turned out a crowd that shared fishing stories of the day and the warmth of the fire.  Members fished a variety of water including Davidson River Outfitters' "Trophy Water", the TU top 100 Davidson River, a couple NC DH rivers, and small mountain waters for wild trout.  My 14 fish day (3 brookies/11 bows) day is just one example of fishing results.  See "Backcasts" below for big fish caught by others.

Enjoy the Holiday season and mark January 28 on your calendars for our first meeting of 2014.

Sincerely,
Brad

Fish Hawk Tip of the Month-
Fishing Midges

Times are changing. The days of dredging big flashy nymphs under tennis ball sized

neon strike indicators to catch hard fished over trout are closing fast. It's time to change

your tactics and improve your technique. It's time to go small to catch more and bigger

fish. Continue Reading Here

"Junk Food for Trout"

As the old saying goes "ones man's junk is another man's treasure". We all have

that fly box hidden away deep in our fishing vest that is stuffed with what we call

"attractor flies" or "hatch busters" but we all know these are just code words for

our infamous "junk box."Continue Reading Here

Chattahoochee Abstract on Tailwater Invertebrates Study-

Courtney R Holt and Darold P. Batzer

The majority of the world's large river systems are affected by dams. The influences of these

unnatural flow regimes are wide-ranging, affecting both abiotic and biotic conditions. The

Chattahoochee River in Georgia is highly regulated, and below the upper-most large dam at

Buford supports a recreational fishery. Continue Reading Here
