Upper Chattahoochee Chapter #436 - Trout Unlimited

September 2013

This Fall is a great time!

The summer deluges have let up and the weather is cooling off.  We've helped clean up the Hooch, and we've improved brook trout habitat up in the mountains.  It's time to think about trout fishing.  October Fishing Dayz should be popular.  And then the second weekend in November Ron Cheslock has planned our Fall Fishing Trip to Brevard, NC.  The list of registered members I saw over a week ago already numbered 23 fishermen.

Still on the subject of fishing, I am pleased to announce that UCCTU will be presenting the 2013 Fly Fishing Film Tour on Wednesday, November 6, at Ippolito's as our Fall fundraiser.  This is a convenient opportunity for members to see these high quality films.  In between films will be live auction items including several fishing opportunities we will be announcing.  Dinner will be an  Ippolito's pizza and salad bar.  Members can get a head start on their Christmas shopping with many silent auction items.  Watch for more details.

Sincerely,
Brad

Kevin will be giving fishing tips for the Davidson & surrounding areas. This will be good prep for those members planning on going on the fall trip,November 08-10,2013.

In 2000 Kevin purchased Davidson River Outfitters. Kevin has been guiding the streams of Western North Carolina since the early eighties and knows most of the fish on a first name basis. While Trout fishing has a special place in his heart, Kevin spends the majority of the year fishing and guiding for Smallmouth Bass. Kevin has also put his vast knowledge of the sport into developing DVO's school curriculum, and is also a Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor. He is also a known fly tier and is currently the Fly-Tying Editor for "Fly-Fishing the Mid Atlantic States". He has also had several of his original patterns published in various magazines as well as being produced by some of the national tying companies. When not guiding or tying flies Kevin can be found off in the far corners of the world hosting a trip or looking for the next great fishing location in the world.

Gear Tip- Choosing a Dry Fly Rod
By: Gary Merriman - The Fish Hawk

Few choices are as important in fly fishing as which fly rod you choose. The fly rod is the delivery system for your fly line, it controls how your fly lands on the water surface, it maintains the dead drift, and it is the shock absorber that protects your tippets when fighting fish. To many, the number of fly rods on the market is daunting and the choices can be overwhelming but we will try to clear the air and make give you some great tips for how to pick the perfect fly rod. In this article, we will focus on what makes a quality dry fly rod and how to choose one.

"It's Hopper-time!"

Most fly fishermen think of the Rocky Mountain West when they dream about big trout on big hopper patterns. Because of our mild climate here in Atlanta we typically will not receive our first frost until mid November which means grass hoppers and other terrestrial(land based) insects are on the menu for Chattahoochee trout through late Fall. With the recent break from rain the Army Corps of Engineers has been able to back off water releases significantly from Buford Dam allowing for low and clear river conditions. Believe it or not larger size #6  hooks in hopper patterns such as the Schroeder's, Dave's, Joe's, Bugmeister, BC-hopper and Letort Cricket will bring better quality fish to the top. With these larger dry flies you will gain added buoyancy so larger nymphs can be suspended as droppers offering bigger profile nymphs in murky "turn-over" water. Use larger diameter 9ft tapered leaders with a 2X or 3X tippet and be sure to grease the entire leader with dressing for a more natural presentation.  The "big bait big fish" theory may pleasantly surprise you on the surface waters of the Hooch!
