MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

August 17, 2015

From the President...

Congratulations to the South Cobb Arts Alliance and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra for a wonderful evening of music recently when "Almost Elton John" with Craig Meyer took the stage at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. The Orchestra and SCAA have announced a second event for Sunday, September 20th, when they will present "An Irish Heart" with Chloe Agnew live in concert with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra. Click here for more information, including how to purchase tickets.

Partnerships like this one are what make our community great and you will see many examples in this newsletter.

Speaking of partnerships, MIC, in connection with the Cobb County Police Department, worked with the residents of Lane Drive and Garner Drive and Greer Park community within Mableton to help kick off the Neighborhood Watch Program.  Thanks to Bethel Chapel Full Gospel Church for being gracious enough to host us.  If you live in Mableton and want to start one of these programs in your own part of our community, know that MIC is willing and able to help.

We are excited about all the good things happening in Mableton and urge you to be a part of at least one organization working to improve our community. Want to get more involved? MIC is always ready to put your talent and passion to work, or to put you in touch with an organization that is aligned with your interests.

Give me a call or send me an email - I'm always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

Joel Cope

Mableton Farmers' Market Season Drawing to a Close
Every Thursday, 8:30am to 12:30pm
Thanks to our many supporters and patrons who came out during this very successful 2015 market season.  Only two market days are left until season end on August 27th. Come check out the locally grown produce, fruit, gourmet seasonings and more!  Enjoy a free sample from the cooking demonstrations.  Come and meet our new vendor from Pure Bliss Organics!

Wholesome Wave Georgia and MIC partner to double SNAP (formerly food stamp) EBT card transactions at the Market.  It's like a BOGO! We expect that by season end, we will have doubled the dollar amount over last year. That means double the benefit to SNAP customers and eligible market vendors alike. Thanks to Cobb & Douglas Public Health for their support in this effort as well.  Consider a tax-deductible donation to Wholesome Wave Georgia or Mableton Community Fund to recognize this very worthwhile undertaking.

Visit Market Manager Dave McDaniel any Thursday morning through August 27th or email him any time with any questions.

Regional Neighborhood Summit Focuses on Education
Saturday, September 26th from 8:30am to 3pm
On Saturday, September 26th, The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta will convene the 2015 Regional Neighborhood Summit. This one-day gathering held at the Georgia International Convention Center is an opportunity for the region's community and neighborhood leaders to connect with one another, learn from each other and advance their vision for metro Atlanta. More than 800 attendees from the 23-county region are expected to attend the workshops, plenary sessions and small group consultations.

This year's theme is "Embracing the Power of Education." Workshops will highlight the continuum of education that begins at birth and is carried on through school, college and career. Presenters will include leaders throughout the education continuum. This includes representatives from the early education, K through 12, post-secondary and workforce fields. Everyone interested in education - parents, civic leaders and private stakeholders committed to helping children succeed from birth through career are welcome to attend.

The conference hours are 8:30am to 3pm; registration is as little as $10 per person for groups of 5 or more. Please contact MIC by August 22nd if you are interested in the group rate. If we can form a group, MIC will handle the registration. Click here for more details.

Academies of Pebblebrook Launched for the Class of 2019
Partnership with Usher's New Look, Inc.
It's the start of a new school year - and a New Look - for students of Pebblebrook High School with the launch of the Academies of Pebblebrook, a new brand of education that engages every student with a choice and a path to college or career - or both. To initiate this exciting shift in academic and community focus, the Cobb County School District has partnered with Usher’s New Look, Inc.  Usher's New Look is a charity founded by singer and performer, Usher Raymond.

With the launch of the Academies of Pebblebrook, all non-magnet members of the class of 2019 will choose from two distinct areas of study: The Academy for Creative Studies and The Academy for Global Service. The new academies echo the goal-based approach created by The Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts, which has been at Pebblebrook High School since 1983. Each focused area of study provides students with real-world opportunities and problem-solving techniques, so they can apply their knowledge while learning practical business and social skills. Also, every freshman will participate in this New Look Program, "Powered by Service."
