The Fight to End Dog Racing Worldwide
Arlington-based GREY2K USA works every day to protect dogs

by Christine A. Dorchak, Esq.

President and General Counsel, GREY2K USA Worldwide

Headquartered in Arlington Center, GREY2K USA Worldwide is a non-profit team dedicated to passing stronger greyhound protection laws and ending the cruelty of dog racing. I co-founded the organization with political strategist Carey Theil, veterinarian Dr. Jill Hopfenbeck and the Reverend Tom Grey in 2001.  We advocate for greyhounds in the legislative and judicial process and also promote the adoption of our gentle friends worldwide.

The inspiration behind GREY2K USA dates back to 1992, when my dog Kelsey and I were struck by a speeding train while out for a walk one morning.  Kelsey managed to pull us slightly off course, preventing a head-on collision and saving our lives.  When I awoke from a coma, my first words were, "How's Kelsey?"  I promised right then and there that if I could ever walk again, I would devote my life to helping dogs, and that she and I would do this work together.

My dear Kelsey had suffered a broken hip the day of our accident, but she was to live until the age of fifteen, dying just a few days after I finished law school.  She helped me through a long rehabilitation, four years of evening law classes and the early days of our campaigns, staying by my side as long as she could.  It is Kelsey's inspiration that continues to motivate my work for her fellow dogs each day.

Our Work

In recent years, GREY2K USA has phased-out dog racing in many states and successfully prevented its introduction to countries such as South Africa, Jamaica and the Philippines. The organization's most rewarding campaign involved a voter referendum in which four million people were asked to shut down the two tracks of Massachusetts.  In November 2008, Bay State citizens voted overwhelmingly in favor of the greyhounds, starting a chain of events that quickly led to the prohibition of dog racing in our sister states of New Hampshire, Rhode Island and most recently, Colorado.

All told, we have helped close more than half of all US tracks over the last decade, and we are now working to apply our strategy to help end dog racing worldwide.

Greyhounds suffer terrible injuries while racing

At tracks nationwide, greyhounds routinely suffer serious injuries. These include dogs that suffer broken legs and spines, paralysis, head trauma, puncture wounds and death from cardiac arrest.  Since 2008 alone, more nearly 12,000 injuries have been reported and in Florida, a dog dies every three days

Small cages are greyhounds' only homes

When not at the track, racing greyhounds endure lives of terrible confinement. They are kept inside warehouse-style kennels inside stacked cages that are barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around.  They stay in cages that measure 32 inches high by 31 inches wide by 42 inches deep for twenty or more hours a day!  There are no toys for them and no play.  This is no way to treat a dog!

You can help save the greyhounds

Please watch our video and sign and share our petition to end dog racing now.  Together, we can end the cruelty of dog racing worldwide.

Third Annual Bark for Life in Arlington
Doggies and their people enjoyed a beautiful day at the Res while helping the American Cancer Society

by Joan Black, with The Firefly

The 3rd annual Bark for Life of Arlington was held at the Arlington Reservoir on a beautiful sunny afternoon, May 9, from noon to three.  The American Cancer Society Bark for Life is a noncompetitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer. {American Cancer Bark for Life, A Canine Event To Fight Cancer}.

Six teams and many individual owners and a total of 43 dogs -- many dogs wearing purple bandanas with their heads and tails held high -- walked the scenic 1 mile loop around the Reservoir raising almost $6,500.00.  Among the walkers were A-DOG members Joan Black with the Firefly and Eileen Jones with Molly.  Donations are still being accepted. Please consider a contribution.

"It was an incredible day for our pups."remarked Dee Savioli organizer. "Thank you to everyone who came out."

Special thanks to all the vendors and volunteers, including:

Janice Zazinski of Beloved Companion for providing complimentary massage for the dogs and delightful conversation with their human companions.

Dog Willing was on hand demonstrating FUN scent work. It was plain to see that   "the nose knows" and scent following is a wonderful and engaging learning activity.

Last Hope K-9 Rescue contributed to the festivities with adorable adoptable dogs

who are currently waiting in foster for their FURever, FORever homes.  There were many kisses, wiggles and wags compliments of  the Last Hope furbabies.

Last Hope K9 Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization, a volunteer-run, foster-based rescue based in Massachusetts. Ask us how you can help! ([email protected])

A huge shout out to the Jones Family, J.B.Licks for donating ice cream for human and canine alike, Fit Doggie and Me for supplying water bottles and Crate Escape for "poop" bags and doggy treats. Thank you to all who donated and cheered. Special thank you to Deanna Savioli and the many volunteers who supported this event.  I hope others consider joining Bark For Life in the future. The Firefly and I had a wonderful time together supporting a great cause.

Humane Lobby Day  in Massachusetts, held this year on May 13 at the Massachusetts State House, and was co-hosted by the MSPCA. This is an annual day, organized by humane societies, to meet with your legislators as their constituents in support of pending animal protection bills. Thank-you to participants for sharing their experiences, including:
  • Hildy Martus:  Many of our legislators do support these bills but a few do not due to interests of their constituents in issues such as "not banning Sunday hunting" or  powerful lobbying against initiatives such as "banning the use of bull hooks on circus elephants."  Human Lobby Day is an opportunity to meet with your legislators or their aides and be a voice for the animals which is very important. As the aide from my state Rep. Dave Rogers said, "Animals can't vote. There are so many bills that come through the state house and the ones affecting people have the priority." We have to be their voices and work for more humane and compassionate laws.

  • Rosemary Tirell:  Representatives from The Companion Animal Protection Act Coalition of Massachusetts attended Humane Lobby Day as well. In the past year, they have researched other states that have CAPA as law and have found evidence nationally,  that keeping shelter data, being transparent with these data and allowing approved rescue organizations access to homeless pets in public and private shelters saves lives. Their goal is for every healthy or treatable pet in a Massachusetts shelter, be adopted into the loving home they deserve. CAPA - MA Coalition visited with several legislatures in order to share their ideas.

Paws in the ParkSave a Dog animal shelter, located in Sudbury, MA, held its 15th annual Paws in the Park Dog Walk Dog Walk Fundraiser on May 3.  The event, held on a beautiful spring day at Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury, was a fun way for the shelter to educate people about the importance of adopting shelter and rescue dogs while raising money for their mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and find adoptable homes for abandoned dogs.  Some of the highlights of the day's activities included a K-9 frisbee show by Flying High Frisbee Dogs, a parade of adoptable dogs, silly dog games including dress your dog, agility games, and a dog/human look alike contest.  In addition, there were nearly 60 vendors set up at the event, including 18 other dog rescue groups.  Fundraising for this year's Paws in the Park was especially important as Save a Dog is in the process of purchasing the property where their shelter is located and where they have been renting for the past seven years.  If you are interested in donating to the shelter, volunteering at the shelter, or learning more about dog adoptions, please contact Save a Dog

Bark for Life in Arlington teams raised $6500 for the American Cancer Society.  The 3rd annual event was held at the Arlington Reservoir on May 9  (see full article above by participant Joan Black)
