Admin Office Move

The PHFS admin team (Brandi, Kurt, Emily, Jill, and the Mobile Housing Team) has moved from our office in the Goose Hollow Family Shelter location to just a few blocks north of our Thirteen Salmon Family Center. Our shelters remain in the same locations.

Please note our new address: 1221 SW Yamhill St. Suite 210, Portland, OR 97205. Please direct all mail, including monetary donations, to this location. For in-kind donations, please see the note below.

We look forward to welcoming you to our new space soon!

UPDATE: In-Kind Donation Drop Off
Due to our office move, there will no longer be staff present during the day at the Goose Hollow Family Shelter. For this reason, we ask that all in-kind donations be made between 1pm-5pm, Monday-Friday. Please enter through the main doors to Goose Hollow Family Shelter (double doors labeled #5, to the right of the playground) and follow the direction signs to the bin.

For large donations and/or those needing a receipt, please call or email Emily to arrange a scheduled donation time. More information can be found on our website.

We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in this change. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions and/or concerns.

Welcome to the Family, Robert & Diana!
PHFS Adds Two Overnight Shelter Coordinators
This summer is one that marks a lot of changes at PHFS, including our nightly routine at the Goose Hollow Family Shelter. After more than 20 years of volunteer-led evenings at GHFS, we are excited to welcome two very experienced, very friendly overnight staff to our team.

Robert and Diana are PHFS' first ever overnight staff. Robert comes to us from Transition Projects as an Overnight Residential Advocate, and Diana comes to us from Family Winter Shelter (operated by Human Solutions) as the Shelter Lead. They officially began their positions at PHFS on Sunday, June 28th.

These coordinators will be at the Goose from 10pm-7:30am nightly. Please help us welcome them as you see them around shelter!

Attention Volunteers: We will be leaving both Overnight Host volunteer positions open. We still absolutely need and appreciate our Overnight Host volunteers to complete our nightly tasks. We hope that the addition of the Overnight Shelter Coordinator position(s) will provide the appropriate support you may need to allow more valuable time with our families. We also believe that the consistency of these two new staff will aide in our families' routine and comfort level during their stay at the Goose Hollow Family Shelter. As always, please direct any questions or concerns to Emily via email or phone.
Volunteer Spotlight:
Brynn Macaulay
How long have you been volunteering with PHFS and what got you involved initially?
I started volunteering in January 2015. I've volunteered in some way locally since I was 14, but not as much with children as I'd have liked. I love children and helping families with children, and so I got on VolunteerMatch.com and found PHFS. The rest is history!

In what position/shift do you typically volunteer and has that changed or evolved over the years?
When I volunteer, it's usually as Afternoon Host at the 13 Salmon Shelter. When the weather is nice and I don't see as many of the families at 13 Salmon during the day (because everyone's out enjoying the sun!), I try to get in a couple of shifts as Kid Time Host at Goose Hollow.

What's your favorite thing about volunteering with PHFS?
The kiddos! Seriously, how can you have a bad day after playing trains or legos, or snuggling up with a book with one of the kids here? I also have loved being a "regular" enough to get to know everyone, from the families we are helping to some of the shelter staff, and even a few of the employees of the church whose space we share--all of these connections foster a real sense of community, and I love that. Last, but not least, the 13 Salmon Coordinator Samuel's sense of humor is pretty wicked.

Can you share any advice for new volunteers?
Be real. Don't be afraid to have real conversations with people here, and let them talk about things that are going on in their lives besides homelessness. This will allow you to make genuine connections with the members of our community here.

Outside of PHFS, what do you do for fun/to unwind/relax?
Hiking in Forest Park, reading, cooking and baking, having friends over for dinner, compulsively cleaning my apartment, wearing brightly colored wigs, and pretending I can line dance.

What's something that few others would know about you?
I speak Spanish fluently. Once upon a time, I also lived in a convent in Peru while I was volunteering there. As a result, my Peruvian residency card has me listed as a novitiate nun.

Whats your favorite thing to do in Portland during the summer?
Berry pick at Sauvie Island, make said berries into some kind of dessert, then invite everyone over to eat it!

Anything else you wish to share?
I think Tina Fey should run for president.
Adopt-a-Night at the  Goose Hollow Family Shelter

Want to make a big difference in a fun way? You and a group of 8-9 friends, family members, or colleagues could adopt one whole night of volunteer shifts at the Goose Hollow Family Shelter - putting you in charge of everything from cooking and serving dinner, to playing with the kids, to organizing donations, and even spending the night!

Gathering a group together for this opportunity is such a big help to PHFS staff, and ensures that our families can have a fun, safe, and fulfilling evening together. Visit our website for more information, or call Emily, Volunteer & Development Manager, at (503) 915-8307.

Congratulations! You made it to the bottom.
We hope you had a better 4th of July than this cat.

Thanks for all you do!
