The Oregon Community: Capacity Building Continues
We are so grateful for the support of The Oregon Community Foundation in our Capacity Building initiative. This month, we received our second and final installation of our Capacity Building grant at $20,000. This grant allows our Shelter Coordinators to have more dedicated time to work one-on-one with our families, enabling them to find housing faster. Thank you, OCF!

The mission of The Oregon Community Foundation is to improve life in Oregon and promote effective philanthropy. OCF works with individuals, families, businesses and organizations to create charitable funds to support the community causes they care about. Through these funds OCF awards nearly $70 million annually in grants and scholarships.
"Community 101" Makes Big Impact at PHFS

"Community 101 (C101), a program of The Oregon Community Foundation, with major support from the
PGE Foundation, is a classroom-based program that gives students the opportunity to get involved in their communities through grantmaking and volunteering."

In May alone, PHFS received a grand total of $2,302 from the Community 101 program, supported by The Oregon Community Foundation and the PGE Foundation. Students at Scappose High School granted us $750, and students at Lincoln High School granted us with $1,552.

Thank you to Scappoose, Lincoln, The Oregon Community Foundation, and the PGE Foundation for your unending support of PHFS and our families!!

[Re]Introducing
Emily Mrusko
PHFS' New Volunteer & Development Manager
Emily Mrusko, Volunteer & Development Manager
Hi volunteers & donors! My name is Emily Mrusko, and I am PHFS' "new" Volunteer & Development Manager. I have been working with PHFS for a little over 15 months as the Operations & Development Associate, and I'm so excited to get to expand on this work by connecting with our extremely generous community of volunteers and in-kind donors. You can learn a little more about me by reading my biography on our website, or shoot me an email if you'd like to chat over coffee or lunch! Otherwise, if you have any questions about our volunteer and/or donations programs, please reach out to me at emily@pdxhfs.org or (503) 915-8307 from today onward. I'm looking forward to seeing you around the shelter!
Volunteer Spotlight:
Congregation Beth Israel
Congregation Beth Israel has been providing dinners at Goose Hollow Family Shelter for over a decade. We asked some of our Beth Israel volunteers why they volunteer at GHFS, and this is what they said...

Becky Erickson: "As a retired teacher I know there are needs in our community.  I enjoy the fellowship of the volunteers  and the clients we help.  It gives me an opportunity to be active in the community."

Debbie Burns: " My dear friend asked me to help and I got hooked.  I like to cook and see people enjoy good food."

Daureen Morris: "I enjoy helping others and meeting new families. I'm proud to be part of a program that helps people get back on their feet."

Laura Herman: "Daureen has invited me several times to come help at Goose Hollow. I'm a student at University of Portland majoring in biology and will graduate this spring.  I'm interested in healthcare and exploring my options."

Heidi Knodell: "My dear friend Daureen needed to fill a spot at Goose Hollow for Temple Beth Israel. She was having trouble and called me, as she said you can always count on your friends. Daureen and I have volunteered together since our children were in preschool for various causes and at Goose Hollow for more than ten years. I have never worried about where I would sleep or what I would eat. I was privileged to stay at home to raise my two boys with a supportive husband. I am glad that I have the opportunity to help these families in some small way - not everyone is blessed with a strong emotional and financial support network."

Thank You, EPB&B!

Our friends at Elliott, Powell, Baden & Baker, Inc. was selected for a Safeco Insurance? Make More Happen Award because of their volunteer service with PHFS. The award came with a $3,000 donation from Safeco Insurance to PHFS and entry in the Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Contest.

Because voting for the Make More Happen Award exceeded expectations for all organizations that participated, we are being awarded an extra $500 from the contest. This means PHFS receives a total of $3,500 because of the generosity and thoughtfulness of these great neighbors and partners.

Thanks to all that have voted for our team in the month of May - what a fun opportunity to be a part of!

Congratulations! You made it to the bottom.

We know that homelessness effects everyone involved. At PHFS, a common Life Lab class taught to our parents focuses on Stress Management. Thanks for all you do!
