CIRCAC in the field

Recently, CIRCAC's Director of Science and Research, Sue Saupe, participated in field studies to gather data about vulnerable habitats in Kamishak Bay. CIRCAC has been keenly interested in the Kamishak Bay area for some time due to its potential vulnerability from spills elsewhere in the Inlet from established or future activities, such as the planned 2017 federal lease sale. We know that net currents within Cook Inlet can carry oil to areas downstream--as has been demonstrated through satellite drifter buoy deployments--and the eddy circulation of Kamishak Bay could collect and concentrate oil in nearshore areas important as herring spawn habitat. Spill Prevention and Response Division announces reorganization The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation's Spill Prevention and Response Division (SPAR) has been reorganized to create a new program, Prevention, Preparedness and Response, to handle spill prevention and response planning. This new program combines the responsibilities of the Industry Preparedness Program and the Prevention and Emergency Response Program and will be led by Gary Folley. The Contaminated Sites Program, which regulates longer term remediation of contamination, will continue to be a separate entity within the Division of SPAR but will work closely with PPR when sites are transferred. SPAR recently received a funding boost with the Governor's signing of a bill, which CIRCAC supported, creating a fuel tax to fund clean-up costs incurred by the division which cleans up approximately 2,000 spills a year and was facing a 40 percent budget shortfall.	CIRCAC appointed as voting member to new Cook Inlet Harbor Safety Committee CIRCAC has been selected to serve on the 2015 Cook Inlet Harbor Safety Committee as a voting member. CIRCAC is also represented on the Cook Inlet Harbor Safety Committee Managing Board, which acts independently from the committee's voting members. Read more.
