Direct flights from Anchorage on Yakutia Airlines

Discover some of the greatest UNESCO World Heritage sites in Siberia and the Russian Far East, now accessible at your fingertips. With the resumption of Yakutia Airlines' direct flights from Alaska to Kamchatka and Yakutsk, these great places have become easy for American travelers to explore. Kamchatka's Geysers and Volcanoes, the Lena Pillars, the Sikhote Alin range, Lake Baikal, and Wrangel Island are all breathtaking landscapes, preserved for their unique beauty and rich untouched ecological habitats.

KAMCHATKA VOLCANOES: Kamchatka, Russia's adventure travel capital, teems with wildlife l ike brown bears, the Steller sea eagle, and the world's largest salmon, and its geysers and volcanoes form a UNESCO Heritage Site. The region contains over 300 volcanoes and calderas, 29 of them active.

The flight to Kamchatka continues on to Yakutsk, home to LENA PILLARS NATURE PARK. These picturesque cliffs reach up to 900 feet high and extend for miles along the Lena river.

SIKHOTE-ALIN mountain range, located in Khabarovsk and Primorsky regions, is renowned for its unique wildlife. This unusual mix of taiga forest and subtropics is a home for endangered species like the Siberian tiger, Himalayan bear, and lynx.

LAKE BAIKAL, near Irkutsk, is the largest, deepest, and oldest freshwater lake in the world that needs no introduction and will be an experience of a lifetime for any traveler. It provides countless opportunities for outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, rafting, wildlife watching and more.

WRANGEL ISLANDLocated above the Arctic Circle, was declared a federally managed nature sanctuary in 1976, and it remains one of Russia's remotest pieces of protected wilderness. Wrangel Island is difficult to get to independently, so consider booking an expedition cruise run by Heritage Expeditions. Your adventure begins with a flight from Nome, Alaska to the remote port of Anadyr.

UNIQUE TOURS:

MAGADAN-YAKUTSK / YAKUTSK-MAGADAN
ROAD OF BONES

Yakutsk - Magadan. Kolyma Highway.

With the resumption of direct flights between Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Magadan via Siberian Light Aviation, Magadan, one of the world's most isolated cities, becomes more accessible for American travelers. Consider exploring the famous Kolyma Highway that connects Magadan and Yakutsk, traversing the most desolate part of the Russian Far East. To start the tour in Yakutsk, travelers can use Yakutia Airlines' Anchorage-Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky-Yakutsk service or connect to Magadan from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to start a tour in Magadan.

The route has become the ultimate trip for adventure motorcyclists. Known as the Road of Bones, the road was constructed during the Stalinist era by Gulag inmates. After the fall of the USSR, the route was traveled by Western motorcyclists, including the team of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman (2004) during an around-the-world motorcycle journey which was depicted in a television series, book and DVD Long Way Round.

Local tour operators can also provide vans or trucks for transportation (capacity depends on number of passengers traveling in a group). Itineraries may vary depending on the number of travel days. Travelers may have an opportunity to see: sightseeing in Magadan/Yakutsk, multiple villages along the Kolyma highway, Gulag camps, ghost town of Kadykchan, multiple abandoned gold miners' settlements, wildlife, and more, and meet many interesting and resourceful people.

Traversing this infamous road will be a genuine challenge. It will take you through one of the remotest regions on earth, but will expose you to some of its most stunning scenery.
