Public libraries are central in creating healthy communities - from researching and securing resources for patrons, to employing social workers and nurses, to disseminating information about current health issues and actions, to developing health initiatives. Join Steve Podgajny, Director at Portland Public Library, and Dr. Sam Zager as they share groundbreaking results from their research on the health benefits of using the library. Dr. Zager will discuss how the HeLPURS study brought health indicator data and library usage profiles together to gain a better understanding of the value of the Portland Public Library's efforts in improving the overall health of their community. The results provide evidence that public library use has quantifiable associations with health, particularly in the areas of substance abuse and depression-anxiety disorders. Learn about how they conducted the study, the outcomes, and what the results mean for the future for their programs, facilities, and other development opportunities.

Thirty Libraries and Museums Tapped as Finalists for National Medal
The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced 30 finalists, including four ULC member libraries, for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation's highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community. For 21 years, the award has celebrated institutions that demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service to make a difference for individuals, families, and communities.
"The 2015 National Medal finalists have made real and lasting contributions to their local communities through programs that engage and inspire the public," said Maura Marx, acting director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. "These institutions serve as trusted providers of educational resources, skills development, and civic engagement. We salute these museums and libraries, which play a key role in shaping our future by providing boundless opportunities for lifelong learning."

The National Medal winners will be named later this spring, and representatives from winning institutions will travel to Washington, D.C. to be honored at the National Medal award ceremony.

Nationwide Foundation Gives $3 Million gift to CMLF
The Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation (CMLF) has received gifts totaling $3 million from the Nationwide Foundation toward the Great Libraries Create campaign, a $20 million public/private fundraising initiative to support Columbus Metropolitan Library's (CML) aspirational building program. The library plans to build seven new branches, renovate two others and transform Main Library within the next few years.
"The Nationwide Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to our community's young people by investing in great libraries that will impact their success in school and beyond," said Columbus Metropolitan Library CEO Patrick Losinski. "We are grateful for their generosity and partnership."

Accessibility Education: KDL Audits Branches  Kent District Library recently went through efforts to identify and rectify areas of concern regarding accessibility for patrons that have physical challenges. As a result, other organizations are using KDL's efforts for their own corrective measures. Watch the news story here.
