Historic Downtown Basalt is Rocking!

This week Habitat for Humanity announced that the world-renowned nonprofit will move a Habitat ReStore into the former Clark's market downtown store in April. Three commercial spaces on Midland Avenue have either been rented, sold or are under contract (more details in the week's ahead). Habitat for Humanity, which is also building a Habitat house in the old neighborhood above town, plans to set up shop by April of this year, and has contracted for a two-year lease which will allow important flexibility for future planning.

Motorcycles on Midland ~ Opening night Tuesday April 7, 5pm, at Stubbies Bar & Grill
Special Guests: Wally & Peppy Dallenbach

In furtherance of our ongoing and successful collaborative efforts to revitalize downtown, a group of us met last week at Stubbies Bar & Grill to plan a monthly Motorcycles on Midland night in historic Basalt. The premier event will be held on Tuesday, April 7, starting at 5pm at Stubbies, with special guests Wally and Peppy Dallenbach, followed by a rotation in restaurants around Town. Future newsletters will list locations and further details. The event is open to the public so whether you're motoring around on two wheels or four, join us.

Set Your Sails Basalt Student-Business Program is Setting Anchor
The Basalt Chamber-Basalt High School conceived program to link students with local businesses and professionals to help chart their passions is making its first matches. This pilot program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to ask key questions of business mentors to support informed career, education, and life choices. The Basalt Chamber CEO has worked with a group of leadership students over the last few months to build a program proposal, student application process, guidelines for student and business participants and evaluation. Approximately 15 students will be enrolled in the 2014-15 session, with ideas being developed to enable broader student participation and benefit. The first few connections target professionals in areas of pediatric medicine, nutritional consulting and event planning. JAS Aspen provided the first match.

Band Battle AKA Battle of the Bands Returns to Basalt
The Basalt Chamber of Commerce and Basalt Downtown Business Association (BDBA) met this week with JAS Aspen to confirm the return of the Band Battle - formerly known as "Battle of the Bands" - to Basalt on Saturday, May 9 of this year. Ideas were flowing, with talk of food contests, Midland Avenue business welcome specials, and additional events for students. The program brings together student bands from Aspen to Rifle to compete in various categories from rock to country, jazz to heavy metal, and mariachi to you name it! We're delighted to welcome the Band Battle and JAS Aspen to back to an even more beautiful Basalt and Lions Park.

Basalt Chamber Fund Drive?
Have you been listening to Aspen Public Radio this past week? They're charging ahead with a semi-annual fund drive that, while punctuated by friendly, entertaining reminders of the importance of community support, is taking a new approach. No interruption of regular programming. It's daring and I hope supremely successful!

The Basalt Chamber is also conducting its semi-annual fund drive. We're asking for your participation in the 2015 Basalt Community Guide & Business Directory. It's the face of Basalt. A guidebook to all that's alluring, innovative and unique to our community. It's the detailed directory for our many Chamber business members. It's up and down the valley, all through the year. It's the best advertising choice for any budget.

For just three weeks, we'll be asking you to be part of the magazine by reserving ad space, contributing great photos or writing an article. We have just a short time to build a beautiful magazine, so we're connecting with regular reminders and appeals. Please excuse our (over)filling your inbox. It's important, and we'll soon be back to our regular programing. For more information on the magazine, see below. Thank you!

MOTORCYCLES ON MIDLAND REVS UP
Opening Night: Join us at Stubbies, Tuesday, April 7, 5pm onward and upward
Guests of honor: Wally and Peppy Dallenbach

Motorcycle enthusiasts and friends are invited to the opening night of Basalt's "Motorcycles on Midland" gathering. Presented by the Dallenbach Ranch, Basalt Chamber of Commerce, and Basalt Downtown Business Association, the motorcycle night will be held every first Tuesday of the month at different restaurants throughout historic downtown Basalt.

Known and loved as the "Home of the Colorado 500," Basalt is also home of Wally Dallenbach, famed race car driver, his wife Peppy and their family. The Dallenbach's have long hosted events in and around Basalt that bring hundreds of people to the area from all parts of the world, supporting the community and raising local scholarships. Wally says he's thrilled to participate in these events that support Basalt and bring  friends - old and new - back to town.

Motorcycles on Midland is open to the public and will be held every 1st Tuesday of the month at alternating restaurants.
We're looking for the perfect name for these events. Please email us your ideas and names to add to our invitation list.
TSA Seeks Employees for the Aspen Airport

I received a call last week from a representative of the Transportation Security Administration. She nicely asked if we might help recruit qualified workers for positions at the Aspen Airport. While we have job postings on the website, we don't normally cover that in the newsletter. Still, it was intriguing and we want to support a good team at our local air hub. So....

If you're looking for work, and this strikes your fancy, the TSA is offering part-time permanent Federal positions with full Federal benefits, including paid, ongoing training, flexible work schedules, a retirement plan, paid time off, and more. Apply before March 3, 2015 at this website and enter "TSA" in the "keyword" search box and "Aspen, CO" in the "location" search box. Call 1-877-872-7990 for more information. Good luck!

The FISHING REPORT
While hobbling around on a gimp foot that I broke a few weeks ago, I haven't been fishing as much as I generally do. Don't feel too bad for me though. I've still been getting out there twice a week on average. I have, however, had to learn how to slow down, watch where I'm walking, and think twice about.... read the rest of the story here
