Revving Up for the Woodward Dream Cruise

Birmingham is getting ready for the world's largest one-day automotive event, the Woodward Dream Cruise. It's the time of year when 40,000+ classic cars and more than one million people line Woodward Avenue to celebrate the automobile. The Birmingham Cruise Event, scheduled for Saturday, August 15 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., is located on South Old Woodward from Merrill Street to Lincoln. It features 300 classic cars of all makes and models, sponsor exhibits, live entertainment and more.

The Chevrolet exhibit will be located in the "triangle" south of the 555 Building, where Old Woodward meets Woodward Avenue. They will host a variety of displays and activities starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and running through the conclusion of the Cruise at 9 p.m. It's a great location to check out the displays while viewing the classic cars on Woodward. Both WXYZ Channel 7 and WOMC 104.3 FM will broadcast live throughout the day from Birmingham and the Chevy event respectively.

Event day registration is open to individual cars, model year 1978 and older. Individual cars may check in after 9:30 a.m. at the registration tent (enter westbound on Brown off of South Old Woodward). Day-of parking is $25, based upon availability and on a first come first served basis.

Find more information about the event at www.birminghamcruiseevent.com.

Updates from the Multi-Modal Transportation Board

On July 9, 2015, the Multi Modal Transportation Board ("MMTB") discussed and recommended approval of an application by the residents of Bowers Street between Columbia Street and S. Eton for residential permit parking only on both sides of the street.

The MMTB also discussed a letter submitted regarding traffic safety issues on Cole Street.  The Police Department conducted speed studies in the area and determined the 85th percentile speed was 27 mph, which was acceptable on a 25 mph road.  No action was taken on this matter.

The MMTB also discussed multi-modal improvements to S. Eton Road from Villa to Lincoln.  Board members discussed the extent and layout of on-street parking, sight distance issues at corners, the use of pavement markings to delineate parking lanes, sharrows to encourage road sharing for bicyclists, and pedestrian crossing improvements.  Several recommendations to help address these issues were approved, and will be passed on to the City Commission.

Finally, City staff provided an update on the proposed re-striping of W. Maple from Southfield to Cranbrook, which will be completed in October 2015.

The Multi-Modal Transportation Board meets the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Municipal Building.  Visit www.bhamgov.org/multimodal for additional information about the Multi-Modal Transportation Board.
