For those of us who care deeply about promoting solar energy in our community, we have a unique opportunity to support an exciting new venture in downtown Newark. Richard Downs, an experienced local solar installer, and Jeremy King, Sustainability Coordinator at Denison, have offered to organize and oversee the installation of solar panels on the YES Club, a highly-visible downtown building used for a much-loved local youth program. We see this as a wonderful "hands-on" community demonstration and education project about the benefits of solar, engaging both youth and adults.

This project depends on community support. The YES for Solar! Fund has been established at the Licking County Foundation to hold contributions which are raised to cover the costs of this project.

Thought for the Day

"Solitude facilitates Silence.  But interior silence is not isolation; on the contrary, it is openness toward others.  For the barrier between myself an my neighbor is the thoughts or images that I form about him or her in my heart."

- from the prayer journal of one of our members, as she was on a silent retreat

We're blessed to be in a community with a vibrant local foods movement!  If you can, join us this Saturday at the Granville Farmers Market for a short interfaith blessing from 8:15-8:30 AM--"A Celebration of the Growing Season:  A Blessing with Those who Raise our Food."  You may bring along a symbol of the season if you like--earth, seeds, gloves, tools, your shopping bag, etc.--and we'll put it in the center of the circle of blessing!  Coffee & donuts to follow.

Thanks to Bryn Bird at the Licking Co. Local Foods Council for being the driving force behind this meaningful, community-building event.  Participants include myself, Stephen Applegate of St. Luke's, Susan Britton of Centenary UMC, Paul Enke of St. Edward's, Steve Goldston of the Jewish Community Center,/Wexner, and  Trip Porch of First Presbyterian.

This Sunday is Pentecost--the "Surprise!" Sunday in the church year.  Lunches on the Square sack-lunch making in the Chapel after worship, and Equal Exchange table.  Hope to see many of you as we gather this weekend!

Shalom, Dwight

Thanks!!!  (many this week...)

...In addition to all those thanked during last week's service, we want to make special mention of those who worked so hard putting together a very fun Children's Pageant last Advent season--especially Jack & Ceciel Shaw and Kristen & Jay Snyder.  One of the year's highlights, for sure!

...and thanks, also, to Jerry Griffin & Charlie Fritsch who co-led a series of discussions (which ended last Sunday) around ways to democratize wealth by expanding local collaborative initiatives--ideas suggested in Gar Alperovitz' book, What Then Must We Do?  Collaboration.  A great word that should probably be our UCG "word of the year!"  What can each of us do to collaborate or to nurture collaboration in our circles of influence this year?

...and thanks to Fackler's Country Gardens for donating plants to the Youth Plant Sale week before last.  Sorry for the wrong information about plant donors last week!  FACKLER'S gets all the credit this year!  So if you stop in there, please do say thank you to the staff for their generosity.

...and "Thank you!" to an anonymous donor who recently made a generous $3,000 gift earmarked for building repair & upkeep priorities!  This is sorely needed, as Property & Grounds Coordinator Mathew McFarren faithfully continues to make repairs & improvements to our well-used buildings!

...and finally "Thank you!" to another anonymous donor who recently bought a solar panel for the YES Club rooftop via the YES for Solar project "in honor of United Church of Granville Educational Leaders--you bring light and energy to UCG!"  Very generous (and clever)-- thank you!

 Summer Sunday Brunches!
Beginning June 14th, after worship

Five minute coffee conversations are great, but eating together is even better!  On most Sundays this summer (except for Lunches on the Square Sundays and the July 4th weekend) we're going to be hosting a brunch in the Annex after morning worship--from 11:15--with some tables set up outside if weather permits.  Kids are welcome to play in and around the Annex while we eat. A good chance to make some new friends.

"Thanks to so many of you for signing up already to help!
We still need team members.  Check the list on the back table in the sanctuary and add your name(s) on the dates when you can help!"
- Kitty & Doris Jane

Did you know?

...that Joanna Samuelson, who has served UCG as a seminarian since August, 2013, will be finishing up her two-year internship at the church soon?  Joanna's last Sunday at UCG will be June 14th.  Joanna has contributed so much to our congregation during these two years--we'll be sorry to see her move on, but at the same time, we're glad that she'll be embarking on yet another stage of her preparation for ministry !
