Past and Present Sheriffs, Narcotics Detectives, and Deputies gathered to honor former Erie County Sheriff Michael Amico and to discuss the growing narcotic problem in Erie County recently. Erie County
Sheriff Timothy B. Howard and Chief of Narcotics Alan Rozansky organized the gathering, which was also attended by:
former Erie County Sheriffs Michael Amico, Thomas Higgins, and Patrick Gallivan, Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour, and former Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit members. The group
discussed current narcotic problems and the evolution of law enforcement in battling this problem.
Former Erie County Sheriff Michael Albert Amico, who turned 95 this year, remains active in the law enforcement community. He sits on the board of law enforcement agency foundations including The International Narcotics Association.
In 1969, Michael Amico ran for Erie County Sheriff and won his first term. As Sheriff, Amico used his experience and dedicated much of his term to ridding the streets of illegal drugs and expanding the Sheriff's Narcotics Unit. Under his leadership, the Narcotics Unit increased the number of Deputies and Detectives assigned to the unit and began aggressively investigating the illegal drug trade. His dedication and foresight culminated in the Sheriff's Narcotics Unit of today and the members of today's unit share his passion for public safety and removing illicit drugs from the streets and neighborhoods of Erie County.
The New York State Sheriff's Association, Sheriff Howard and Senator Gallivan all honored former Sheriff Amico's lifetime commitment to law enforcement at the gathering. He is the oldest former sheriff in New York State.

Cattaraugus County Undersheriff Bill Nichols' Fight with Leukemia Inspires his Colleagues to Shave their Heads in Solidarity
Multiple news agencies reported this week that Cattaraugus County Sheriff Tim Whitcomb and more than 40 members of his office shaved their heads to express their solidarity with Undersheriff Bill Nichols who
is currently receiving treatment at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute for leukemia.
"I was the first one," Sheriff Whitcomb said. "I was struggling for a way we could all show our support for Billy. I've gone up to see Billy every week he's been up in Buffalo. It's very difficult for him. You struggle to find out what you can do to help. In this department, we fight together and we win together."
By Thursday, almost a third of Sheriff Whitcomb's staff had joined him in shaving their heads. They framed a group photo and brought it to Undersheriff Nichols. It now hangs in his room where he can see it. They also collected money to make a cash donation to Roswell Park in Undersheriff Nichols' name.
"It's crazy. I'm fiercely proud of our agency. I'm so proud of all our employees and their demonstration of solidarity. I'll forever be proud of this day. It's the difficult moments in life that bring people together who care about each other," Sheriff Whitcomb said.

Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo received recognition for the re-accreditation of his Corrections Division and 911 Communications Center recently. NYS Sheriffs' Association Executive Director Peter Kehoe presented re-accreditation credentials to Sheriff Zurlo
in a
ceremony
held
at the Sheriff's Office
in Ballston Spa.
"Achieving accreditation takes hard work by a lot of people. The entire staff of Sheriff Zurlo's Corrections Division and 911 Communications Center deserves to be recognized for this achievement," Mr. Kehoe said.
"
Only a fraction of the state's 62 counties have qualified for multiple statewide accreditations," said
Sheriff Zurlo. "
Earning accreditation
really does show that members of our office are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in their profession, in order to best serve the citizens of our county."

Broome County Undersheriff Fred Akshar to Run for the 52nd Senate District Seat in November
Republicans are backing Broome County Undersheriff Fred Akshar, the county party's secretary, to run for the newly opened 52nd state Senate District seat,
Undersheriff
Akshar
will oppose Barbara Fiala, a Democrat and former state Department of Motor Vehicles commissioner. The 52nd district seat opened last month when longtime Sen. Tom Libous was convicted for lying to federal investigators.
"I've committed my life to making our community the best it could be. The families in our community deserve a strong, energetic voice. I plan to bring the same passion and dedication from my service in law e
nforcement to the State Senate," Undersheriff Akshar said.

Monroe County Sheriff's Bomb Squad Puts on Fireworks Show for Kids at Camp Good Days

NYSSA Deputy Director Chuck Gallo Serves on the Governor's Police Officer of the Year Award Committee
 The Governor's Police Officer of the Year Award Committee met in Albany on August 8 to consider nominations for the year 2014.
Chuck Gallo served as our Association's representative on the committee,
meeting with representatives from DCJS, the New York State Police, NYPD-PBA, New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, Police Conference of NY, and the NYS Association of PBAs. Those representatives included the Executive Commissioner Mike Green/DCJS, Superintendent Joseph D'Amico/NYSP and Executive Director Margaret Ryan/NYSACOP.
The award winner will be announced by the Governor' s Office in due time and an award ceremony will be arranged in the winner's home area. Runners-up will receive Certificates of Extreme Valor from the Governor.
The Police Officer of the Year Award was created in 1983 to recognize a single police officer, or team of officers, for an exceptional act of valor, symbolizing the service of police in New York State. DCJS solicits nominations for this award every Spring. Sheriffs are encouraged to carefully review the criteria and consider nominating any deserving members of their agencies.

Associate Counsel Alex Wilson recently met with Warren Clark, president of the New York State Better Business Bureau in Clarence, New York, following a presentation by Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard to a group of senior citizens regarding the Yellow Dot Program. The purpose of the meeting was to to discuss how the Better Business Bureau can work with NYSSA in promoting the Yellow Dot Program through its constituency, the myriad of businesses of New York.
