In 1986, President Ronald Reagan designated March as Hemophilia Awareness Month, to spotlight this rare disorder--and all bleeding disorders--and raise public understanding. At that time we were newly aware of the devastation HIV had on our community. It wiped out up to 10,000 people, about half of those in the United States with hemophilia, in an unprecedented medical catastrophe.
This month, we remember those who have fallen and whose lives were sacrificed so that children like my son could live a life free from blood born pathogens.
Let's also remember that the war against hemophilia suffering is not over. People with bleeding disorders are still dying from lack of treatment. But as always, there is hope. Save One Life is dedicated to bringing hope and resources to patients living in poverty, who otherwise may never have a chance. We know we cannot save everyone but our motto--repeated in some variation in many of the world's religions--is "to save one life is to save the world."
Thanks to everyone who has made sacrifices to bring hope and resources to the poor with bleeding disorders, and especially to those who sponsored a child and helped us surpass our goal this month!

Child A Day Campaign a Success!

Making a Difference with Micro-Enterprise Grants

Save One LIfe recently provided a micro-enterprise grant to Sandel Maxin, 47, of Romania, to buy a new sewing machine and ironing station for his tailoring business. In addition to his moderate hemophiia B, which affects his ankles, elbows and knees, Sandel has hepatitis C.
After attending tailoring school, Sandel worked for several years in a factory that exported clothing to Russia. When the factory closed Sandel returned to school to learn more advanced tailoring skills. As factories in his area closed and employment opportunities dried up, Sandel wanted to work from home, but a very old and undependable sewing machine prevented him from doing any more than simple mending. Now Sandel can take on any tailoring task. As the only tailor in his village, he is confident that he will successfully support his family through his business. Good luck, Sandel!

Wheels for the World 2015: Piles of Miles!
When a man is determined, there is no stopping him!
Cyclist Barry Haarde is riding again for Save One Life! This time he begins in San Francisco, California on May 30. Thirteen states, 52 days and 4,000 miles later, Barry will arrive in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on July 21. PILES OF MILES is Barry's fourth Wheels for the World tour.
In 2014 Barry cycled 2,904 miles through the southern US with BIG WHEELS KEEP ON TURNIN'. In 2013 Barry rode 120 miles a day in
FAST & FURIOUS, totaling 3,456 miles. In 2012 Barry became the first person with hemophilia and HIV to cycle across the United States when he rode 3,667 miles. That's a total of more than 10,000 miles!
This year Wheels for the World has TWO goals: *raising $55,000 towards program and operations *raising 130 beneficiary sponsorship pledges

Seven Summits Quest Mountaineer Chris Bombardier Achieves His Fifth Peak
Congratulations to Chris Bombardier, who summited Carstensz Pyramid at 16,000 feet in Papua, Indonesia on March 14. He is just two mountains away from being the first person with hemophilia to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents. We salute Chris for his tenacious commitment to show what is possible for a person with hemophilia, and for his compassion toward his blood brothers who are less fortunate than he.

In February our intrepid bookkeeper, Nancy Morrison, accepted an offer for a full time job at The Mind and Life Institute in Hadley, Massachusetts. We are very pleased for her and know she will be a great asset to the organization.

Save One Life beneficiaries face the tough challenge of poverty with a bleeding disorder.
An annual sponsorship is $264. Save One Life sends 90%, or $240, overseas to assist the beneficiary and his patient organization.

We are very sad to share the passing of three beneficiaries:
D. Divakar, 18, from Tamil Nadu, India, had moderate hemophilia B. He also suffered from HIV. He succumbed to a viral infection on February 15.

Samanvith Domakonda, 3, from Hyderabad, India, had severe hemophilia A. He had been receiving prophylactic treatment at the Niloufer Hospital for Children in Hyderabad. He died from an intracranial bleed en route to the hospital on March 22.

|
Amir Saminu Salisu, 8, from Nigeria, had moderate hemophilia A. He lived with his aunt and uncle in a household of 13 members. Amir had been complaining of a headache and visited the hospital, but he didn't receive treatment. A week later he passed away on March 30.
