March 3 - Submission Deadline Approaching! Calling All Teen Filmmakers! HC DrugFree is looking for teens to create Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that focus on preventing prescription & over-the-counter drug misuse and abuse in youth ages 12 to 25 for the HoCo FilmFest. Submission deadline is March 3, 2014. The winning film, if appropriate, will run as a PSA on HC DrugFree's website, at HC DrugFree programs across Howard County, in local media, and in other ways determined appropriate by HC DrugFree. March 13 - Senior Week, Staying Safe in Ocean City - 7:00 p.m. Atholton High School, 6520 Freetown Rd., Columbia, MD.
Many Howard County high school seniors participate in the Maryland tradition of going to the shore for "Senior Week". Having so many unsupervised teens in one place can lead to dangerous situations, risky behavior, and trouble with the law. Before deciding whether or not to permit your child to go to Ocean City for Senior Week, find out the facts from Ocean City Beach Patrol Sergeant (and Mayfield Woods Middle School teacher) James H. McVey, IV and Ocean City Police Corporal Howard Caplan as they offer advice to keep teens safe. Parents are encouraged to bring their high school senior to this informative program.

April 3 - What You Need to Know About Teen Partying - 7:00 p.m. Glenelg High School, 14025 Burntwoods Rd., Glenelg, MD. A panel of speakers will discuss the reality of what goes on at teen parties.

April 26 - National Drug Take Back Day - 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Start collecting expired and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines for proper disposal. Keep them out of the hands of youth and our water supply. Convenient drop-off locations will be announced closer to the event and will be listed at http://hcdrugfree.org/drugtakebackday.html. April 26 - Needle, Syringe, EpiPen Collection - 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. HC DrugFree's office, Wilde Lake Village Center 10451 Twin Rivers Rd., Columbia, MD. Stuck with hypodermic needles, syringes or EpiPens and don't know what to do with them? At a recent meeting for Project SAM, (Smart Approaches to Marijuana), Joan Webb Scornaienchi, the Executive Director of HC DrugFree had the opportunity to meet and speak with former congressman Patrick Kennedy. Kennedy, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 until 2011, is the face and the name behind Project SAM. Project SAM opposes the legalization of marijuana while supporting increased funding for mental health courts and the treatment of drug dependency, as well as access to cannabinoids for those with cancer and other serious illnesses.
