A universal and uplifting journey of hope and salvation that spans generations,
Les Misérables is the blockbuster hit musical combining an absolutely epic story with soaring, spine-tingling melodies and unforgettable lyrics. With a clear focus on storytelling and spectacular vocal performance, this incredible production will appear on our stage in July 2015. Audiences will be moved by the story of Jean Valjean, the reformed convict who is dogged by relentless officer of the law Javert, and swept up in the spirit of revolution alongside the underdogs of 19th century Paris. Hearts will break for Éponine as dashing young student Marius falls for Cosette, and as Javert closes in and the rebels' resistance begins to collapse, the stage is set for confrontations, confessions, and a deep examination of the universal struggle of desire versus duty and the redemptive power of love. Chock-full of comedy, tragedy, history, and everything in between,
Les Misérables has more than earned its accolades over the years. With 47 songs and outstanding acting, sets and props the performance is over and you are wanting more!
Here is a rehearsal photo from last week on the stage.
Director's Notes
I fell in love with Les Misérables back in 1987 when I was lucky enough to score a ticket to see the original New York production. I was a poor, young actor desperate to see this ground-breaking new musical. It had been sold out for weeks and tickets were as rare as hens' teeth. Undeterred, my friend Judy and I went to the box-office ready to plead, beg or sell our souls. To our great surprise we landed two singles, one behind the other in the very back rows of the upper balcony! I don't think either of us took a breath for the entire show. Afterwards, awash in tears, we immediately went to the lobby and purchased some "merch" (very new in those days) and a copy of the cassette tape. We plugged in to our Walkmans on the way home on the train that evening and by the next day I knew most of the lyrics. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day I would be given the opportunity to direct this amazing show. But life is a wonderfully unpredictable thing and here I am, thanks to Ray Hogg and a very talented and trusting team, cast and crew. And now, facing this daunting task, I begin by asking why is this show still relevant? Why is it one of the longest running musicals of all time? Aside from the glorious score and the romantic story, it encompasses humanity at its best and at its worst. It captures the universal struggle of life; the choices we make as human beings, the passion with which we fight for what we believe in, our need to find and preserve love, to challenge the status quo, to rebel against oppression and to fight for our right to be free. These battles continue and likely always will. And so, I'm sure, will Les Misérables.
