Plainfield Center of Islamic Enlightenment - Ramadan Community Dinner

On June 27th, 2015, the Plainfield Center of Islamic Enlightenment (PCIE) hosted a Ramadan Community Iftar Dinner at their mosque. The dinner was organized to celebrate the month of Ramadan and to foster friendships with the City of Plainfield community.  Ramadan is about individuals limiting their intake of food and drink during daylight hours and participating in celebratory evening get-togethers with friends and families over food.

At the end of each day, the fast is broken with a meal called Iftar. The meal is generally simple and designed to provide nourishment. Iftar also provides an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate together over a large meal.  For religiously observant Muslims, breaking the fast may also be accompanied by special readings of the Qur'an.

After everyone was seated and the guests were welcomed at the Iftar community dinner, greetings were brought by Councilman Cory Storch and Councilwoman Diane Toliver; Fire Chief Frank Tidwell; Shep Brown, Director of Community Relations and Social Services; and Mr. Barry Goode.

There was a significant showing by members of the Plainfield Fire Department, and for many of them, their first Iftar. This is the second time members of the Fire Department attended an event at PCIE. Guests were excited about the opportunity to get to know one another and support the City of Plainfield as it continues to grow in its diversity.   We all look forward to many more community events sponsored by the PCIE.

Wanted in College Graduates: Tolerance for Ambiguity
Excerpt from Article:
As artificial intelligence increasingly makes many jobs obsolete, success in the future will belong to those able to tolerate ambiguity in their work. Too many recent graduates, however, approach their job descriptions the way they did a syllabus in college---as a recipe for winning in a career. They want concrete, well-defined tasks, as if they were preparing for an exam in college. "Excelling at any job is about doing the things you weren't asked to do," said Mary Egan, founder of Gathered Table, a Seattle-based start-up and former senior vice president for strategy and corporate development at Starbucks. "This generation is not as comfortable with figuring out what to do."

New Jersey State Update: Speaker Prieto on Restoring Tax Credit for Working NJ Families (A-4602)

Restoring Tax Credit for Working NJ Families
Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson) discusses the Legislature's recent action to restore a tax credit benefiting working New Jersey families.

The bill (A-4602) increases the state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to 30 percent of the federal credit after years of Christie administration cuts to the successful anti-poverty program. The governor reduced the tax credit to 20 percent of the federal credit from 25 percent in his first budget in 2010, effectively raising taxes on low-income families by $45 million, and failed to restore it in subsequent years.

Notice of Proposed Rulemaking: Overtime

Except from Article:

The Department of Labor has announced a proposed rule that would extend overtime protections to nearly 5 million white collar workers within the first year of its implementation. Failure to update the overtime regulations has left an exception to overtime eligibility originally meant for highly-compensated executive, administrative, and professional employees now applying to workers earning as little as $23,660 a year. For example, a convenience store manager, fast food assistant manager, or some office workers may be expected to work 50 or 60 hours a week or more, making less than the poverty level for a family of four, and not receive a dime of overtime pay. Today's proposed regulation is a critical first step toward ensuring that hard-working Americans are compensated fairly and have a chance to get ahead.
