Plainfield Center of Islamic Enlightenment - Ramadan Community Dinner

On June 27th, 2015, the Plainfield Center of Islamic Enlightenment (PCIE) hosted a Ramadan Community Iftar Dinner at their mosque. The dinner was organized to celebrate the month of Ramadan and to foster friendships with the City of Plainfield community.  Ramadan is about individuals limiting their intake of food and drink during daylight hours and participating in celebratory evening get-togethers with friends and families over food.

 

At the end of each day, the fast is broken with a meal called Iftar. The meal is generally simple and designed to provide nourishment. Iftar also provides an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate together over a large meal.  For religiously observant Muslims, breaking the fast may also be accompanied by special readings of the Qur'an.

 

After everyone was seated and the guests were welcomed at the Iftar community dinner, greetings were brought by Councilman Cory Storch and Councilwoman Diane Toliver; Fire Chief Frank Tidwell; Shep Brown, Director of Community Relations and Social Services; and Mr. Barry Goode. 

 

There was a significant showing by members of the Plainfield Fire Department, and for many of them, their first Iftar. This is the second time members of the Fire Department attended an event at PCIE. Guests were excited about the opportunity to get to know one another and support the City of Plainfield as it continues to grow in its diversity.   We all look forward to many more community events sponsored by the PCIE.

UNION COUNTY VEGETABLE VOUCHER
The Union County Aging and Disability Resource Connection will be at the center on Wednesday, July 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to distribute food vouchers to Union County residents age 60 and over. Please bring proof of residency and current income with you. You will receive four vouchers totaling $20.00.

Please Note: Social Security no longer provides a representative at the center. Your membership must be current in order to receive a voucher.

Plainfield High School welcomes New Principal
Superintendent of Schools Anna Belin-Pyles is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Willie Worley, as principal of Plainfield High School, effective July 1, 2015. Mr. Worley replaces Mr. Otis Brown who retired from the Plainfield Public School District after 41 years of service in the education field.

Since 2010, Mr. Worley served as Vice Principal of Weequahic High School, in Newark Public Schools. At Weequahic High School, Mr. Worley had extensive supervisory responsibilities over a number of initiatives and student programs. We warmly welcome Mr. Worley to his new role in the district's flagship school. PHS has a student enrollment of approximately 1,500 students, with a professional staff of 125 members, 40% of whom have advanced degrees. PHS offers a comprehensive educational program, a highly competitive athletic program, college and career preparatory courses, and over 25 clubs and activities are available for students' active participation to expand their knowledge and further develop their talents. Summer School Programs at Plainfield Public Schools to start July 6, 2015
Plainfield students are ready to start their Summer Enrichment programs at Plainfield Public Schools. Months prior to the beginning of the summer, the parents enrolled their children via registration applications sent home by their schools. Enrollment has been excellent this year and we congratulate the students and their families for taking part in the summer of fun and learning opportunity. 

 

The summer 2015 Academic Programs sponsored by Plainfield Public Schools will start as follows:
 

• Plainfield High School Credit Recovery Academy for Potential Graduating Seniors (ONLY) will take place at Plainfield High School, Monday - Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M., with graduation expected on August 30.

• 21st Century CCLC/SBYS Summer Learning Camp, for students in Grades 4 - 11, will be held July 6 to August 7 at Clinton School.
