One Plainfield.  One Future.
This Sunday, Mother's Day, we will pay tribute to generations of women who labor or labored tirelessly to support and guide their children. President Obama said it best In his 2010 Mother's day presidential proclamation, "Whether adoptive, biological, or foster, mothers share an unbreakable bond with their children, and Americans of all ages and backgrounds owe them an immeasurable debt. Mother's Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate these extraordinary caretakers, mentors, and providers who have made us who we are."  Happy Mother's Day!

Creating One Plainfield - One Future,

Mayor Adrian O. Mapp
City of Plainfield
Mayor Adrian O. Mapp and Students of Maxson Middle School

On May 6, 2015, I was surrounded by 50 proud students from Maxson Middle School during the grand opening of the Plainfield-Maxson Community Garden.  Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles and Dr. Davenport, Principal, helped me officiate this event. The Plainfield-Maxson Community Garden is a partnership between the City of Plainfield and Maxson Middle School. The students of the Maxson S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program have planted a wide range of produce in this community garden, located off Berkeley Terrace.  I am proud of the students who conducted the research. They have learned the importance of agriculture in an urban setting and how the benefits of healthy eating can be shared with the entire community.

An Engaged Community for the Benefit of All

Community engagement and partnerships is a cornerstone of my administration       and crucial to a community that is unified in teaching the younger generation             and residents to make a difference.  On May 9, 2015, the youth of St. Mark's will       be joined by youth from All Saint's of Scotch Plains to clean up the Rushmore             Playground.  The cleaning of our city streets and playgrounds is very important to     all Plainfielders and my administration. I am determined to partner with faith-           based organizations and other partners to achieve this goal. I commend the youth     of St. Mark's for their leadership and their commitment to serving the Plainfield         community at large.

Youth volunteers will meet at St. Mark at 8:30 am and will proceed and                        arrive at the playground to start working at 9:00 am.

Mayor's Cabinet Shadow Mentoring Program
On Thursday, May 7, 2015, eight students from Plainfield High School, including two seniors who have been accepted to four year colleges, and six juniors came to City Hall to participate in the Mayor's Cabinet Shadow Mentoring Program.  This is an excellent opportunity for Plainfield students to get exposure to city government and my administration.  Throughout the day the students met and learned about the following departments and divisions: Office of the Mayor, Corporation Counsel, Economic Development, Community Development, Department of Public Works and Urban Development, Department of Administration and Finance, Plainfield Action Services, W.I.C., Health Officer, Information Technology and the Municipal Clerk's Office.

The students were also exposed to my administration's strategic plan that focuses on economic development, public affairs and safety, getting our financial house in order and quality of life issues.  The students observed a meeting with my Chief of Staff and representatives of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) as they gear up for their joint job fair scheduled for May 20, 2015.  The students learned about the importance and need for strategic partnerships that will help Plainfielders get back to work, and the importance of logistics and planning for such an event.

The students were not the only ones who learned something on this day... we were "schooled" on social media.  Only one of the eight students use Facebook, while the other six use Twitter.  We also had an opportunity to talk about the events that have unfolded in the City of Baltimore and the rest of the country.   They recognize the injustice and want to help pave the way in finding solutions that benefit all and justice that works for everyone.  This partnership with the Plainfield School system will continue throughout the years. We look forward to giving our young students opportunities for exposure to municipal government.

New Jersey Aims to Recruit 6,000 Mentors by 2018, Invites Government, Business, Education and Community Representatives

Trenton, NJ - As part of New Jersey's first STEM Week, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno today announced the kick-off of the Million Women Mentors (MWM) initiative in New Jersey, which seeks to recruit at least 6,000 mentors for young women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by 2018.

"I am thrilled to announce the New Jersey Million Women Mentors program, which will provide guidance to our young women with an interest in STEM and help them become tomorrow's leaders," said Lt. Governor Guadagno. "By engaging our young women on the benefits of a career in STEM fields, we are not only investing in their future but ours as well.  I applaud all the volunteer mentors for sharing their time to serve as positive role models for these young women."

MWM is a collective effort of corporate sponsors, strategic partners and organizations representing more than 18 million women and girls.  The program welcomes corporations, government entities, higher education groups and non-profit organizations to serve as mentors to increase the percentage of young women pursuing and obtaining degrees and careers in STEM fields.

"Celebrating the state's STEM economy is especially important today because, by 2018, New Jersey needs to fill 269,000 STEM jobs," said Anthony Cicatiello, President of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. "Now is the time to embrace the STEM economy and encourage its growth in New Jersey, and also to introduce students to our state's rich history of innovation. Once they see what we've done in this state, from Edison to streptomycin, they're going to be inspired to keep the legacy going through this century."

In the past 10 years, growth in STEM jobs has been three times greater than in non-STEM jobs, with 80% of the fastest-growing occupations in the United States dependent upon STEM knowledge and skills.  While women comprise 48% of the US workforce, just 24% of women are in STEM fields.

In its first year, MWM has more than 272,000 men and women serving as mentors, coaches, role models, partners and sponsors.  The program has pledges from 27 states, 58 partner organizations and 30 major sponsors.  More information on the initiative can be found online at www.millionwomenmentors.org.

Senator Cory Booker: U.S. Senate Prepares Passenger Rail Overhaul Bill

NEWARK, NJ - U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety & Security, today hosted a field hearing in Newark, New Jersey, on America's passenger rail system. The field hearing sought input to shape forthcoming legislation that will update and improve passenger rail in the United States. "The Northeast Corridor is an indispensable transportation asset and economic driver for New Jersey," Booker said. "Yet we are approaching a crisis as passenger rail investment languishes and the whole system relies on outdated, 100-year old bridges and decaying infrastructure. Meanwhile, our competitors in foreign nations are pushing ahead, leaving us behind. That's why today's hearing is so important: to gather input on a bipartisan effort to invest in and update our passenger rail system."

Six Tips for Keeping Teens Safe on Social Media

As the end of the school year approaches, children and teenagers might turn more to social media channels to stay connected with their classmates and friends during their vacations. This season also gives them the opportunity to make new friends through summer activities or camps, making social media sites like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter important tools to stay in touch.

More than 60 percent of teens in the United States have at least one social media account, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. And while being online is a good way to keep in touch with friends, it's important for parents to be proactive about Internet safety.

Unfortunately, there are people who can use your child's personal information to steal identities, bully them or begin an inappropriate relationship. Help protect students from online dangers by following these safety tips:

1. Keep your child's profile private so that only family and people you know see photos, important dates and other information.

2. Make sure they're not posting personal details, including phone numbers, home address, and the name of their school or Social Security number.

3. Only allow them to publish photos and videos that don't jeopardize their safety or their integrity.

4. Make sure they choose a strong password that can't be guessed, and that it gets changed every three months.

5. Never allow them to accept friend requests from people they don't know.

6. Keep an open dialogue with your children. Ask them to let you know if they've received private messages from a stranger, or from someone at school who is teasing, harassing or threatening them. Those could be signs of cyber-bullying or even a sexual predator.

Get additional online safety tips, and other relevant information on OnGuardOnline.gov, a great government resource for parents and teens.
